Description

Book Synopsis

"Practical theology" has emerged as a distinctive approach to the theological task. Rather than seeing itself as a "branch" of the discipline, practical theology is a theological sensibility highlighting the need to "read the signs of the times" and respond. Here, Veling sketches the contours of practical theology and explores its key elements to reflect on the deeper role of theology in the church and society.

About the Author

Terry A. Veling is a theological educator and writer who has lived and taught in the United States, Israel and Australia. His writing is both personal and scholarly, avoiding academic technicality and pretension. He is inspired by the music of Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Johnny Cash, and the poets Rainer Maria Rilke, Edmond Jabes and Paul Celan. He is indebted to dialogical thinkers such as Gabriel Marcel, Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas. He is married with four sons. His most recent passion is caring for his family's sixteen acre bush-land property on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia.
