Twin mattress doesn't fit. Instructions are not fun!

This bed was a pain to put together. The instructions were not written well. We own 2 regular size twin mattresses and neither one fits. they are too tall. We have another trundle bed and it is not an issue. looks like we need to purchase a slim twin for it to fit with this bed. This is very frustrating.
