Print is too light for regular reading and the pages too transparent. Would be great if not for that.
Catholic Bible - good for protestants too, who want some of the more credible, but non-canonized books included, rather than having to buy them separately. The burgundy leather cover looks nicer than the rubber cover edition I've seen elsewhere. though the leather is so thin, I don't have high hopes for longevity with regular use. We'll see... usually it's the binding that falls apart first, anyway. The color image section is a nice touch, though the higher page quality might mean it separates from the rest of the book prematurely.
The main reason I'm knocking the rating for this book is that the print is too light, especially for a relatively small print book. And the pages are so thin, that even such light (medium gray) print still shows through, making the book less easy to read. The pages don't necessarily feel any thinner than other bibles I've owned, but they appear less opaque. A more distinct chapter separation helps, but this book would be greatly improved with darker ink.
My previous 30 year old Cokesbury has been falling apart for months, and I wanted a different translation. Though, I was raised a Methodist, I chose this Catholic Bible because it's reportedly one of the most up to date translations. Which, while that helps with clarity, each new update of the writings seems to lose more and more of the old English elegance that makes some of the verse so profound. It's more clear, but maybe less quotable. Sadly, while I'm happy to have the translation on hand as a reference, I don't think my eyes are young enough to put up with reading such light print on a daily basis. Recommended due to what this book represents, what it includes, and the work that went into the translation, more than how well the book was produced by Saint Benedict Press.
