Not just a kids book
American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang is a powerful and thought-provoking graphic novel that explores identity, culture, and the challenges of growing up as an Asian American. The story follows Jin Wang as he navigates school, friendships, and the pressure to fit in, alongside the fantastical tale of the Monkey King. Yang skillfully weaves humor, fantasy, and real-life struggles to show how stereotypes and cultural expectations affect self-perception. What I loved most is how the graphic novel tackles complex topics like acceptance, prejudice, and the search for belonging in a way that feels both entertaining and meaningful. This book is not just for teens—it’s a story about identity and humanity that resonates with readers of all ages. Highly recommend! (For SJSU class)

Hard pass
This is a children’s graphic novel. My 9 year old son came to me and said, “Mom there is Jew h8 in this book” and showed me page 35. He was correct. I am submitting a photo with this review, and will caption here, “And ‘let’s be Jews.’ We usually had to steal an item or two from Mrs. Garbinsky’s dresser drawer for this game”. This book is full of other racial stereotypes and s3xual comments about teenage girls bodies. Hard pass and totally unacceptable.
