Description

About the Book

Mireilles finds her world rocked when the Great War comes crashing into the idyllic home she has always known, taking much from her. When Platoon Sergeant Matthew Petticrew discovers her in the Forest of Argonne, three things are clear: she is alone in the world, she cannot stay, and he and his two companions might be the only ones who can get her to safety.

Book Synopsis

A mysterious song in the forest . . .
A discovery in war-torn France . . .
A journey toward hope.

The trenches of the Great War are a shadowed place. Though Platoon Sergeant Matthew Petticrew arrived there with a past long marked by shadow, the realities of battle bring new wounds--carving within him a longing for light, and a resolve to fight for it.

One night, Matthew and his comrades are enraptured by a sound so pure, a voice so ethereal, it offers reprieve--even if only for a moment. Soon, rumors sweep the trenches from others who have heard the lullaby too. "The Angel of Argonne," they call the voice: a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves.

Raised in the wild depths of the Forest of Argonne, Mireilles finds her reclusive world rocked when war crashes into her idyllic home, taking much from her. When Matthew and his two unlikely companions discover Mireilles, they must embark on a journey that will change each of them forever . . . and perhaps, at long last, spark light into the dark.

On the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier comes an emotive tale inspired by the courageous soldiers of World War I.

"In this propulsive tale, Dykes brings together soldiers and an ethereal presence in the woods of France during WWI. . . .Dykes embeds timeless themes of trust, courage, and sacrifice, and Mireilles's ethereal role provides a subtle element of faith. Readers who enjoy the work of Tracie Peterson will love this."--Publishers Weekly

"Told through the lens of multiple characters, Dykes forces readers to deeply engage with the story. There are numerous unanticipated twists and turns embedded in shifting geographic locations and timeframes." --Historical Novel Society

A Resilient Journey-

Thumbs up graphic, would recommend

What an engaging and emotional portrayal of five unique characters in war-torn France during the Great War. This author is such a master of multiple, first person POVs. I loved reading into each character’s distinct perspective, fears and doubts, courage and pain. A story to savor…a story to revisit. The audiobook narration is as exceptional as the story itself. This is the first audiobook I have listened to with five narrators. It was brilliant! I strongly recommend this format and believe that it is perfect for all readers. This book is suitable for mature teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language.

A 2021 Favorite!

Dear Readers, don’t miss out on this exquisite story. This redemptive tale shakes the soul and quivers every heartstring. Each character goes through an enormous and wondrous transformation, and I believe you’ll love their growth, healing, and renovated hearts as much as I have. Dear Yours is the Night, how do I love Thee? Let me count the ways… I love Your hope, Your journey, Your soul recoveries, Your heart repairs, and mostly Your light and love that shines from beginning to end. Dear Amanda D, the Argonne not only changed the Seventeenth Band – it changed me. The spirit of this story is built from pain, beauty, sacrifice, and redemption. The characters begin with hearts as void as spent shell casings, yet they are each transformed and shined to a sheen by the comradery, understanding, sacrifice, and love they encounter during The Great War. I laughed, cried, gasped, grieved, and rejoiced as I witnessed the lives of Matthew, Mira, George, Jasper, and Henry. I connected with each of them and grew to love the nuances of their souls. They feel like my friends. My comrades. My family. My Seventeenth Band. This is why Amanda D is one of my favorite authors. This is why any book she publishes automatically goes on my must-read list. I loved discovering the inspiration of this story in the Author’s Notes in the back of the book. What a beautiful tribute to those forever honored at Arlington. With smart writing, emotive style, extraordinary characters, and a significant message, Yours is the Night delivers an explosive story of redemption that will echo forever in my heart. I received a complimentary copy of this book. My review was not influenced.

An Historical Masterpiece!

"Sometimes there's a dark so thick you just know that God who made the light with his own two hands - with just His words - is going to plunge right into that dark to find you." "There are none who can undo the past. But there is one who will carry the pain of it. He knows too well the sting of injustice. No, more than that. The blood of it. But with it, He bears the scars of his own injustice with the same hands that carry me now." "The God who does not slumber - the same God I questioned, and railed against, and sobbed to, and ran from, after He seemed not to see me or care - He brought me you. . . . . . He crossed you over oceans and years . . . . If He has done that, then I believe He can do anything." It was ever so tempting to let the words of this story speak for themselves; after all, when you are privy to a majestic symphony of words, why interrupt the music with unnecessary chatter? For entering into this author's sanctuary of sound is never simply a reading experience, it is an invitation to enter a scene where every nook and cranny is filled with everlasting hope, even in the midst of seemingly impenetrable darkness. . . . . . . . . . . for Platoon Sergeant Matthew Petticrew met "The Angel of Argonne" under the blanket of night, in a place where grief and survival trumped fear long enough to form a tenuous partnership. Mireille's entire life had been spent in that enchanted French forest, but as the world screamed of war and Mira's very existence was put at risk, her instincts insisted that she follow the odd threesome out of the only world she had ever known, leaving her heart and the memory of a promise, far behind. Although Matthew's battle-worn mind was plagued with unforgiving nightmares, his kind and compassionate nature compelled him to use every skill necessary to ensure Mira's delivery to a safe haven, especially if his companion was correct about her true identity. But nothing fully prepared them for the journey to come, nor the one that would follow, for Mira's forest would once again became a sanctuary, for "the tree was like a house, . . . . I called it 'le coeur' for the way the inside was like a heart. A safe place. . . .a perfect hideaway . . . . of all the trees in all the woods". . . "The day is Yours, the night also is Yours . . . " (Psalm 74:16) Two formerly bleeding, broken hearts braved leaving the shadows behind, confidently basking in the light that was to rise, knowing that "the night is not to be feared", ever again.

Excellent Historical

This is a book to be savored and thought upon not rushed. It contains so much food for thought and brings into reality The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. This story is told from multiple POVs but works cohesively. I love the depth and prose of the story and the characters worm their way into your heart. The courage and bravery that each held inside them and the light that was brought forth in each brought me to my knees so to speak. From the tragic battlefields of the Great War to two hearts that beat as one this is a story of loss, love, new life, and the realities of the aftermath of war. You will feel like you are engulfed in the trenches at times and your heart will bleed and tears will fall unknowingly but it is a story you feel this author must tell. From uttered prayers to transforming truth you will be swept away. I look at that beautiful cover and see the compass that points to our true north Our Heavenly Father. Thank you Amanda for another keeper to be treasured as it is woven intricately amid the strings of my heart. I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
