American Desi is a beautiful, rich picture book about an American and a South Asian child - a child of multiple identities. Through rhythmic, lyrical language, Gopal shows what it is like for a child with feet in two worlds as she tries to figure out who she is and where she belongs. The illustrations by Supriya Kelka are outstanding. They are bold, lively and full of joyful, colorful movement and are a mixture of digital collage, paper, fabrics, mixed-media and is a perfect complement to the text. This is a gorgeous book that I think any child would enjoy. It’s a mirror book in that it reflects children like the main character and a window book in that it shows readers what it feels like to have multiple identities.

Sumptuous artwork and lyrical text combine for a transcendent picture book that celebrates bicultural identity and being true to yourself. The main character initially sees South Asian and American identities as separate but over the course of the book, they discover how both cultures are part of them and worthy of celebration. A refrain of "the colors of me" reinforces this thread throughout the book. NOTE: I wrote this review based on a digital ARC accessed on Edelweiss.
