READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW!!!!
Where do I even start? After reading this book you will absolutely want to go and have coffee with Tyler Merritt (ok let's be real ... you will really want to go hug him and tell him THANK YOU for sharing his life with you). His story. His story is unlike anything I have heard before. You know why? PROXIMITY!!!! You only know ... what you know. Some of the things in this book I learned in history class. Some of the things in this book I have heard from friends. Most authors write words and you read them (or listen to them). Tyler ... nah, Tyler holds your hand and walks you thru his life. You are able to see it thru his eyes. You are able to feel it in your heart. You are sitting right there with him, getting to know the key players. You are getting to see the good ole U S of A thru the eyes of a 6'4" beautiful black man with dreadlocks. There will be tears! Both tears of laughter and tears of heartbreak. Some of my takeaways, in no particular order ... in life we have thin places (life changing moments), sometimes people are horrible to you, life is too short to spend time with people who suck, friends are given to you by God as a really good gift, use your unique life experience to make a difference, shame is powerful, distance breeds suspicion while proximity breeds empathy. FORCED PROXIMITY ... it works! Now ... go buy this book and read it ... and then tell your friends about it ... that my friends is how change starts to happen.

The Real Deal
If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a black man living in America, this book provides an honest and emotional experience from one man's perspective. They say proximity breeds empathy and Tyler Merritt has achieved that in spades. His disarming humor and humanity shines through these pages. His ability to rise above the hurdles of his life and examine his choices with full transparency are something to be admired. I Take My Coffee Black invites the reader into his life, through all the poignant, painful, exciting, funny moments, sliding doors, and all the emotional highs (I laughed out loud) and lows (I shed tears) that have shaped this amazing man. He even sprinkles in some history and addresses systemic racism all without messing up his flow. Merritt's style of writing makes it feel like you're sitting down with a close friend just enjoying cups of coffee together at your kitchen table. Like I said, he is the real deal so be ready. If getting to know someone is to love them, then there is no way not to love this man by the end of this incredible book.

A Must Read!
Honest, Vulnerable, Heart-Wrenching, Encouraging, Warm Merritt says that he took a gamble on proximity when writing, I Take My Coffee Black. It was a bet worthy of his hometown of Las Vegas, NV, high stakes with a high reward, he goes all in. His premise: proximity breeds empathy unfolds in the chapters that follow. He opens up telling his story generously without holding back. He takes you through his life (so far) as a black man in America and lets you in to deep places, the places that have shaped him. His book reads like a conversation by the time you reach the end the conversation feels like it is with a trusted friend. Who am I kidding, It feels that way almost from the beginning. The depth of his disclosures draw you close. He tells his story with humor (yes, the laugh out loud kind) and weaves in history and current events with breathtaking honesty. He shares his hurts and failures and what brought him through and built him up again. I read the book first and then listened to the audiobook. The audiobook is phenomenal and I highly recommend listening. Merritt is a masterful storyteller and the audiobook is warm and engaging and has some beautiful bonus guests. However you choose to take the book in, Merritt’s words are powerful and the transparency and grace in which he shares his life story will keep you thinking long after you’ve read (or listen to) the last word.

I fell in love with this book.
From the moment I started reading I take my Coffee Black, by Tyler Merritt, I was challenged to hear this man’s experience just living in his own skin, navigaiting how someone could instantly judge him with out knowing him. Feeling instantly upset right along with him. Yet, Tyler also has away of imparting humour with allowing you to know things about his musical taste that might surprise you. With his personal stories he mixes in history, actual history, That brings both grounding and depth to this book. By the time I hit chapter’s 3 and 4 where Tyler talks about his partents, I was more than all in on this journey with him. I have rarely had such and experience of Laughing, crying , anger, and complete love for this book as a whole. I believe Tyler is the kind of person anyone would love to be around. His heart comes through in his recipie for “Better Society Gumbo : Proximity (which breeds empathy)+ Honesty (vuneralble Dialougue) + Value (seeing each other as having inherant words) + A common goal (seeing that we’re all in this together)” I feel like in this time where we are having converations about our history, the experience of Black people in this country this book is such a reconing and a bridge to understanding, empathy and Love. The importance of listening and believing black stories. I recomend picking up this book that you will struggle to face some truths, and yet still find yourself unable to put this wonderfully personal book down. My guess is you will fall in love with a 6’2 Black man in the process.

Read this book. Tell your neighbors to read it too.
“Proximity breeds empathy” It’s a simple lesson, and while it is easily said, it is infinitely harder to teach and learn. That’s exactly what the author, Tyler Merritt, was able to accomplish in this book. Personally I am not a 6’4” black man from Las Vegas. I didnt grow up with gangs, music theater, or Jesus. Yet somehow through this narrative Tyler makes me laugh out loud as he talks about young love, makes me want to give him a hug hearing some of the pains of his childhood, and makes me cheer him on as he leaves it all behind for his dreams in Nashville. As a person who tends to see what makes us all different, this book challenged me in my thoughts, and help make me look to what makes us the same.

So Good, So Important
I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America by Tyler Merritt is an important book that I think everyone should read. What does it mean to be a black person in America? I was blessed to know Tyler back in his college years. When I saw that he was writing this book, I knew I wanted to read it because he is one of the most genuinely kind people I have ever met. He's the real deal. To know Tyler is to be fully embraced and accepted as you are. That's how he has always been. Tyler somehow wrapped up his incredible personality and delivered it in the form of a book. Reading this book is like sitting down with him for a life giving, life changing conversation. Come as you are. Listen to his journey. Be willing to challenge your expectations and listen with your heart. You'll never see things the same again. Tyler opens your eyes with his experiences but he has a way of lifting the reader up with his encouragement and honesty. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages and backgrounds. We need to read it in order to truly understand each other. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

I wish everyone would read this book
Please read Tyler’s story. It’s ok if you disagree with him (especially about bananas). I think he’d respect that and offer to sit down with you and talk. And listen. By openly admitting he’s not perfect, he allows the rest of us the grace to admit, even if just to ourselves, that maybe it’s ok if we aren’t perfect either. His unflinching honesty and quiet resilience are inspiring, and I am grateful for the non-preachy (and hilarious, and heartbreaking) way he encourages us all to be better.
