For the mattress, we recommend choosing one with a thickness in the range of 6-10 inches. Q: Is the back of the headboard finished? And does the unit need to be leaning against a wall for support or is it stable free standing?

However, the back of the headboard has only been sanded smooth and not painted like the front. If you have higher aesthetic requirements, you may consider purchasing decorative fabric to cover it.
