Our Hearth & Hand with Magnolia Retro Portable Radio would not be a great fit for the beach since it should not be used in high temperatures, extreme weather or near a water source. This radio is an indoor product, but it should work at the drive in if you keep it inside the vehicle and you do not expose it to extreme cold or heat. Obviously the length of time between charges will depend on the amount of use, which is why there was no definite length of time named in the user manual. I know that in my personal experience with a similar Hearth & Hand with Magnolia radio a full charge lasts about 6 weeks, but I only use this radio for a few hours 1-3 times a week. I have sent a request to our Engineering Team to see if they have any additional insight from their testing, and when I hear back from them I will update this answer. Thank you and have a great day! UPDATE: Our Engineering Team stated that in their testing they found that if the radio is not turned on at all, then the battery charge will last about 8 months. However for playing sound, since each user's habits are different, the team based their testing on playing pink noise continuously with the volume set to 50%, and the charge lasted about 8 hours. Once the battery is fully charged, the power supply automatically switches to DC mode, allowing the radio to operate without overcharging the battery. That said, we don’t recommend leaving it plugged in continuously for long periods. In rare cases, doing so can cause the rechargeable battery line to short-circuit, which may result in the radio turning off even when plugged in. If this happens, the unit can be replaced or refunded under the Target store warranty. So, while you might occasionally pick up some distant AM stations under the right conditions, consistently receiving radio signals from foreign cities is unlikely. The names of foreign cities in the design are purely for decorative or aesthetic purposes—it's a popular vintage style that evokes a sense of world travel and nostalgia.
