Summary of reviews

Revlon's ColorStay Makeup Foundation is highly praised for its buildable coverage, long-lasting wear, and affordability. However, the new formula, featuring the addition of Vitamin E, has received mixed reviews. Some guests appreciate the skin-like finish and the fact it doesn't cause breakouts, while others complain it makes them oily and doesn't provide the same coverage or matte finish as the original formula. The product's SPF protection and range of shades are also appreciated.

If your face is pretty clear of bumps, big or small, then the Colorstay foundation will definitely help smooth out your skin and brighten your complexion.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Let me just say that it was a cool New England day when I tried Revlon’s Colorstay Makeup Foundation in Caramel. I did apply the ColorStay Skin Awaken™ 5-In-1 Concealer prior to applying the Colorstay foundation to help even out my tone and tame the bumps. I noticed that there wasn’t much of a difference with my skin before and after application of the foundation. However, my skin appears slightly smoother in photos with the foundation than without. The foundation did last the remainder of the day, about 5 hours after application. The concealer did not seem to hide too many of the bumps I had on my face, but it did even my complexion pretty well. All imperfections cannot be erased but the concealer was close to erasing the imperfections on my face.

TERRIBLE NEW FORMULA

What are you doing Revlon?! You’ve totally changed the colour. Just bought sand beige which is normally my winter shade. It’s now SO dark it’s darker than my summer shade. If you’re going to change the formula at least get the colour right. All of your loyal customers are wasting money on what is now a terrible product. I’ve been getting this foundation since I was 15 years old, I am now 31 and I’ll have to start the search for something better

What used to be a bestseller is now ruined

This used to be my holy grail foundation that none other could beat. I've used it for 15 years- the shade, longevity, cover everything was perfect but this new formula is like a completely different foundation. I have an old bottle in my summer shade 180 and my skin looks flawless with it while the new one feels like a random watered down foundation. I use the oily version and its no longer that much durabl and longwearing. I have to powder a lot more as it gets shiny quickly. And it just doesn't look that good on too. Revlon ruined their bestseller. Won't be repurchasing. it

Disappointed in the new formula for Revlon Colorstay Combination Oily! The former formula offered more coverage. I have to apply 3 coats of the new formula and it still does not look as good as the former. I used this product for at least 10 years. Highly disappointed! Bring back the former formula to bring back faithful wearers like myself. I will no longer purchase this product.

Gives SoftFlex vibes ♥♥♥

*** Product bought with my own money *** (I don't trust reviews on products received as gift, too often they are offered in exchange for fake high rating. I don't do this, I purchase my products, thus my reviews are truly my own, without compromises). Application method : sponge PROS : - slightly thicker-than-liquid texture that glides easily on skin, - stays true-to-tone once set, - dries neither too fast nor to slowly, - sets to a natural matte finish, - better shine control than the previous formula, though not as outstanding as the SoftFlex formula, - only minor creasing, - good transfer-resistance (although not astonishing), - ALMOST fragrance-free, - long-lasting. CONS : - slightly creases and settles into fine/expression lines IMMEDIATELY after application which requires immediate setting with powder on some areas like under the eyes, forehead and smile lines, - medium coverage at best, - non-calibrated shades between "oily" and "dry" formulas, - erratic pattern in the shade range and in the numbering system COMMENTS : I have very oily skin but I can wear indifferently this foundation in both Oily/Combination skin and Normal/Dry skin formulas. Honestly, calling one for oily skin and the other one for dry skin is a nonsense as the latter is not moisturizing in the least, in my opinion these are just twice the same product with only a few tweaks in the formulas to produce slighty different finishes and coverage levels. I’ve been using Colorstay for 16 years (I began with the SoftFlex formulas when they lauched in 2008). The SoftFlex formula was outstanding, it had iron-like lasting power and was 100% transfer-resistant. Then came the Time Release formula in 2011 (a complete formula change, especially the emulsifying ingredients)… and my 3 years love-story stopped there as the 2011 formulas (both "oily" and "dry") were absolutely horrendous on me, creasing like crazy and transferring onto everything like they never actually set. Between 2011 and 2022 there were some tweaks in the formulas but nothing major nor noticeable. This 2022 formula for oily skin is actually an improvement (for me) over the previous formula. It's better long-lasting and better transfer-resistant than the previous formula, though not quite as good as the SoftFlex formula. As usual, I wear the shade 150 Buff in the "oily" formula, as this has always been my best match. The match is so outstanding than if I miss an area I don't see anything weird, I don't see the foundation at all when I apply it on an area without redness, and on redness-prone area I've just the feeling I'm applying a redness eraser. None of Revlon's competitors has ever produced such a pale shade with olive undertone, most of the time they are too orange or too pink (when I'm lucky I find a true yellow based formula taht I can wear, but it's rare). It has a slightly thicker-than-liquid texture that glides easily on skin (even when spread with a brush). I do prefer a sponge as it meshes better with the skin. It dries neither too slowly nor too fast (and never to the point it flash-dries upon contact with the skin, like a competitor's formula do). It sets to a natural matte finish (more matte than the previous formula), which is an improvement as it is designed for oily skins with unwanted shine. During the setting time it tends to slightly crease on some areas like under the eyes (I don't use concealer, foundation is enough), on the forehead and the smile lines (mine are almost non existent but the slightest creasing emphasizes that this area is not as young as it used to be 20 years ago). So, once blended I dab a clean brush (or my finger) remove any excess product and speed-up the setting process (finger is better for this point), then immediately set with a translucent loose powder. I don't rush to powder the rest of my face as no creasing occurs anywhere else. The color ever-so-slighly darkens during the setting time (which is common, so don't rely on wet swatches to choose your match) but it's barely noticeable with this new formula. Then it stays true-to-tone during its weartime, The previous formula also used to redden while setting, this one doesn't. The shine control is good and, as strange as it sounds, is better with "dry" formula because of its powdery finish. The former Softflex formula for oily skin was much more absorbent and had a far better shine control. Although the word "fragrance" do not appear in the ingredient lists, both formulas are fragranced as they contain ethylene brassylate. While this ingredient gives a gorgeous warm, comforting distinct smell, neither flowery nor sugary (it’s found in many foundations from Revlon and competitors) it does not have any other purpose than perfuming. Fortunately, the smell is much lighter than it used to be and is now barely noticeable (I have a sensitive nose, I smell it but it's much much lighter than before). Nonetheless it’s something to note for the most sensitive skins/eyes amongst us. The shades are not calibrated between "oily" to "dry" formulas. As an example, Buff in "oily" formula tends to be more olive and half a shade lighter than Buff in "dry" formula. And finally a comment on the chaotic numbering system. The pattern in the shades range has always been the same : the smaller the number the lighter the shade, the bigger the number the darker the shade. But with some new shades launches that occured a few years ago, this pattern is not reliable anymore. I tried the shades 135 Vanilla and 140 Oatmeal, thinking they would be at least as pale as 150 Buff as their numbers are smaller… but nope, they are at least 2 shades darker. On the arms swatches pictures provided by Revlon, the shades are not even listed in ascending order of numbers, and the "smaller number but darker shade" occurs for many other shades than mine. Colorstay has made a huge come back in my bathroom for the better (and everyday use) ♥♥♥

10 year customer - New Formula Unusable!!

What happened to the formula?? I've used combination/oily skin for ~10 years. Recently I bought the 180 shade for winter, but I still have the old formula shade 330. The new bottle doesn't apply well, I have to go back in and patch areas. It's oily instead of creamy and it sits into my pores instead of having a smooth finish. It's giving early 2000's foundation. I've had to mix my old and new to help with the consistency but I will have to make the switch I guess.

I, surprisingly, love this foundation. It matches my complexion and shade better than the other expensive brands that I purchase. And, it helps to keep my oil at bay. I am on this site because I haven't seen my shade sold at my local retailers and I want to make sure that it is not being discontinued.

This is the best foundation I’ve used in my life. I’ve gone to Ulta and bought the “expensive” foundations (Fenty, NARS, Estee lauder [did i even spell that right?]). I’ve also tried the “popular” drugstore ones (elf glow, fit me, cover girl, etc) anyways. They have ALL broken apart after about 4-5ish hours. Especially around the nose / mouth. I would have to carry the foundation in my car, remove my nose/mouth foundation and reapply. Sometimes I’d reapply 2x if it was a long day. And honestly i was so over it. I stopped wearing make up for awhile because i was tired of reapplying. Worrying if my make up was gonna be broken apart and I’d be outside looking like a clown. Now I am OILY. After 30 min my nose is oily and it’ll rub off on my hands, clothes etc. i carry tissues in my car to blot it out. With that said. i HAAATE “dewy” foundations because after an hour i shine like a disco ball. THIS foundation has lasted me ALLLLLL DAY AND I STAY MATTE. light shine, honestly to be expected but no breakage in coverage. I’m talking about i applied it @ 6 am and it is on my face at 10 PM. I HAVE SLEPT IN THIS MAKE UP AFTER A NIGHT OF DRINKING, and i woke up flawlessssssssss. You don’t need to reapply. A oil pad to absorb some oil then dab some Powder and it looks like you just applied it. I’ve honestly gone all day without touch ups and it was still good. But for flawless touch and go once a day. I’ve also got a perfect shade match with this foundation. I’m beyond thrilled. I 100% recommend this. The photo i attached is after i wore it for 16 hours. 6am - 10 PM. in California heat.

I hav used Colorstay Longwear Combination/Oily Skin Makeup for years!!! I just purchased "The New" without knowing and instantly upon using it I knew something had changed!! After a week of using I had to look up and see what happened... and this is where I looked up to see. Sure enough, Revlon had to change an already great product. This no longer goes on smoothly, even after putting on a moisturizer before! The pump even dispenses a huge glob, way more than needed because it's too thick. So very disappointing. Sorry Revlon,I will be in search of an new foundation. No one wants their makeup to look caked on, which is how it looks now. This used to be such a great product, with a great price. Goodbye Revlon :(
