Great visuals of which muscles are working and stretching in a bunch of common yoga poses. Also some great side notes about things like plantar fasciitis and digestion. Just wish there was an emphasis on more than mainly the muscles used in yoga. But overall very educational and interesting.

I am a former professor of Ann Swanson's from the Maryland University of Integrative Health where she received a Masters of Science in Yoga Therapy. As is every professor's wish, Ann transitioned quickly and beautifully from start student to esteemed colleague. I am proud of Ann’s commitment to the science in this book, and her insistence on focusing beyond the musculoskeletal anatomy of asana to consider yoga’s many practices and all the body’s systems. Science is served by a recognition of the holism and interconnectedness that exists beyond the reductionism that is sometimes necessary for mechanistic understanding. The 'Questions and Answers' section of the book alone is worth the cost of the whole volume, and each page is loaded with insight and information that surpass the biomechanics. I know that every reader will find something of interest and value within its pages, and perhaps may find something they didn’t even know they were looking for. My hope and Ann’s is that this book helps to make yoga safer and more accessible to those who might benefit most. It now stands within quick reach on my bookshelf as part of a lovely library of resources that belong in any yoga collection.

Finally, a book that really dives into the science of yoga, what's been studied, and how to apply that information. The starting are amazing and so helpful for deepening your practice and for teaching. I'm using this as a main focus of a teacher training, and everyone loves it! I also love that it goes only the anatomic background of the body so that anyone, even complete novices, can make sense if it.
