ONE MISTAKE. That was all it took to put Dustee's life on the line---death right on her heels.
This is the opening sentence of the first book in Susan Sleeman's new series and the danger and intrigue never let up. As I read about the efforts of a special FBI team to save people enrolled in the Witness Protection Program I found myself amazed with just what these witnesses are forced to surrender and I was also astounded to learn about the "dark web", a part of the Internet that most of us never see. Seconds to Live centers around the feverish efforts of the RED Team to find the person who has hacked into the Witness Protection Program database and stolen all of the witnesses' personal information. Their new identities and new locations are now known and they're all in danger unless 'Phantom' can be found.
Susan Sleeman masterfully relates the tension, the fear, and the helplessness that is felt as the cat-and-mouse game continues between this team and 'Phantom'. We also see the inner struggles of the two main characters. FBI agent Sean Nichols, the head of the RED Team, doesn't trust anyone after being lied to by the two most important women in his life and U.S. Marshall Taylor Mills experiences overwhelming guilt every day of her life. Even as they grow to respect each other professionally, it is very doubtful that they can ever put their past hurts behind them. Will Sean ever trust again and can Taylor finally forgive herself? Is it possible for one wounded soul to help another who is just as needy as they are?
Yes, this is a fictional story but Seconds to Live shows the danger of professional hackers in today's society and our need to be ever diligent against cyber crimes. It also has a great faith message and as Sean and Taylor both face their individual struggles, we are reminded that "God didn't betray. Didn't turn His back. He was always the same loving God. Always wanting the best for His children."
This is an enjoyable contemporary suspense novel that has a surprising villian, a little romance, and a whole lot of faith! I'm looking forward to the next book in the Homeland Heroes series.
I received a copy of this book from Bethany House. I wasn't required to give a favorable review and all opinions are my own.

“One mistake. That was all it took to put Dustee’s life on the line—death right on her heels.” - Opening lines from “Seconds to Live” by Susan Sleeman
“Seconds to Live”, by Susan Sleeman, opens with a witness in danger, Dustee, and US Marshall Taylor Mills trying to save her. The action doesn’t stop from the opening page and this suspense thriller has it all. FBI agent and RED team leader, Sean Nichols, arrives on the scene with news that the Witness Protection database has been hacked explaining how Dustee was discovered and now thousands of lives are at stake as they work to discover who is behind the breach whilst simultaneously protecting Dustee from a dangerous killer.
Taylor and Sean both battle with trust issues and wrestle with what it means to trust God and walk in His will. Susan does a phenomenal job of putting into words this complex topic and the characters’ growth through the book is my favourite aspect. She has rooted their development in Biblical truths which are applicable outside of the novel.
Catching the hacker is no easy feat and the story unfolds in interesting and unexpected ways, I flew through it in one sitting. Taylor and Sean are supported by the RED team which is full of more interesting characters and I’m glad this is a start of a series, I’m looking forward to the next one and getting to know each member better!
If you enjoy a good crime thriller, this is one to get! It’s a five out of five on the en-JOY-ment scale and highly recommended.

If you love edge of your seat suspense with romantic tensions that keeps you guessing till the end then look no further, as this one definitely doesn’t disappoint in my opinion. I love that the storyline is original in dealing with the dark web and cybercrime and that I found it very informative. It was eye opening in showing what goes on behind the scenes to place someone in the witness protection program and keeping them safe. The characters of Taylor and Sean grabbed me from the get go and their vulnerability as well as their strong willed persona to hide past hurts draws me in. I love the woven tapestry of faith and learning to trust God in the difficult times instead of relying on self endeared the book to me. I will anxiously be waiting for book two in this new series. I’m thankful to end my year with this bang of fireworks contained within these pages.
I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

This book captured my attention from the first page and kept my diligent attention until the very end. Just the premise is interesting, but author Susan Sleeman has written a book that was so hard to put down because the action just kept happening! Threats from within and without kept the tension high throughout the entire story.
It was quite interesting to witness Sean and Taylor's relationship transition from internet-only to real life. That was a complication on top of having to work together in a high-stress environment, but that also kept it real.
For those who enjoy suspense, romantic suspense, police drama, or CSI-type books, this one is top-notch, and I highly recommend it for both men and women. This is the first book of the Homeland Heroes series by Sleeman, and I can't wait for more!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Seconds to Live by Susan Sleeman is book one in her Homeland Heroes series. When criminals hack into the Witness Protection database, U.S. Marshal Taylor Mills and FBI Agent Sean Nichols are thrust together to solve the case. The problem is, Taylor knows all of Sean’s deep, dark secrets and he’s reluctant to work with her. As usual Susan hooks you with her first sentence and keeps you on the line all the way to the end! I loved the interaction between all the members of the Red group. The author does a great job explaining how different branches of law enforcement works without getting too technical. Because of past experiences both Taylor and Sean had a lot of issues to work through; Trust being the main one. Once they realized that God had always been there for them it was easier to trust each other. The action was pretty intense at times and you never knew what was going to happen next!
I received this book from the author for my honest review.

"Help. Oh, help. . . . she'd made a huge mistake."
When one of U. S. Marshall Taylor Mills' witnesses breaks protocol and is hunted down by a vicious criminal, the tip of the proverbial iceburg breaks through the surface. Not only has Dustee's whereabouts been comprimised but the notorious "Phantom" has managed to breach the entire database of the Witness Protection Program. Frantic to protect those for whom she is responsible, Taylor relunctantly agrees to join forces with an elite FBI RED team, (Rapid Emergency Deployment). However, the lead agent on the case is none other than a man she has only known in cyber-space; Sean Nichols.
Glimpsing Taylor Mills in person for the first time nearly takes F. B. I. Agent Sean Nichols' breath away. They know each other so well, and then again they don't, since their only conversations have been through various emails back and forth across the country. How interesting has this case become, when not only are the lives of dozens of innocent people at stake, but rapid fire emotions are threatening to rise to the surface as well.
As the team rushes to stay one step ahead of a deranged hacker, Taylor and Sean struggle to find a middle ground through some of the tough decisions that a high profile case demands. In the end, who may have "seconds to live"?
What an interesting story line, especially for those who have a profound understanding of technology and how dangerous criminal infiltration can be when exercised at the highest levels. The two main characters spend a lot of time in their own heads analyzing their relationship from every possible angle, which may slow the story down for some readers or it could have the opposite effect . . . . an enhanced satisfaction in the end.
I received a book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
