WeatherX WB/AM/FM Solar Charge Radio - Red (WR383R): Hand-Crank, USB Port, NOAA Alert

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was looking just for a simple radio to keep on while my dogs are at home alone, but a coworker recently told me about a weather radio which I'd never heard of before. When I saw this product and all it had to offer I just knew I had to buy it. Several options to power it was definitely a huge selling point for me.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So this is great to have in case of emergencies. I appreciate all the ways you can power this radio with. Only one failing grade is the inability to charge this unit from a power bank. You have the ability to charge from solar, crank, or wall outlet. Why not a power bank? That To me is an oversight. Because of this I removed two stars. Because of this I would not recommend to a friend as there are plenty of options out there that are able to charge from a power bank.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love that I have several options for powering this in an emergency. The radio is clear if a bit tinny. But I misunderstood what the siren is. I thought it was to warn me if storms are coming, but apparently it’s for me to get attention if I need it in an emergency. Unfortunately, there’s nothing in the instructions about the siren or how or when to use it, so I’m only guessing. Come to think of it, I’m not sure how much I will use this because the storm warnings aren’t necessarily specific to my area, so it can take a while to get around to what’s happening locally as it explains warnings in other counties.

I bought this for weather alerts but also to have a radio when doing chores outside the house

Also, it only takes 3 AA batteries and it's small enough to keep on the shelf and it doesn't take up a lot of space. I like that I can charge my phone too and the cable was included

My only concern is that the crank knob fell off along with the screw when I tried to use it. Other than that, it seems like an excellent product that will be very useful during power outages or just for listening to games and music."

Imagine my happy surprise that it has a solar powered lamp, a hand crank to charge the internal battery (if no other power source is available), and the ability to run on AA batteries, too! It's going into the emergency preparedness kit. Worth every penny!

This is a good product and looks like it could be a life saver if in horrible conditions. However, I wish the USB charger worked from the battery. You can only charge devices using the hand crank, which is a disappointment.

The phone charger feature is handy, too, when I'm away from an outlet to plug into. The flashlight is a great added feature, too. I would highly recommend this radio, with its added features.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently bought this product when our area was threatened with a massive blizzard with the accompanying power outages. It seemed to do a lot of things that you might need during a power outage….and it does! It just doesn't do any of them particularly well. The radio audio is tinny. The weather band is-what-it-is…you get the locally imprecise, government-prepared canned weather forecasts. The flashlight is dimmer than most I already own even at full charge. The lantern is “okay” but because it swings up from the side of the unit, it only lights a small area. There doesn't seem to be a way to stand the unit up to distribute the light over a broader area. The siren (yes…it has a siren!) is loud! I suppose if you were listening to in the woods that siren would be heard over a fairly large area. There's a small mercury thermometer built into the top of the unit that is pretty accurate. I like that it has both internal, rechargeable batteries and AA batteries (not included) as well so you have two power sources. That's handy. Now let's talk about one if the big reasons I bought it…the recharging handle or, as they refer to it, the Dynamo Hand Crank. The radio charges normally by plugging it into the wall but when the power is out you can, supposedly, recharge the unit or other rechargeable devices such as phones by turning this crank (at a pace of 2 cranks per second). I tried recharging both the unit and my iphone (using the included USB port) and was unsuccessful at both. I could not raise the charged percentage of my phone at all…it remained 86 percent despite over 5 minutes of steady handle-turning! Same thing with the unit itself. It says that the red light would illuminate while turning the handle and would go out once it was fully charged. I turned that crank for a solid 10 minutes and the light never went out while I was cranking. I knew the unit was charged so why did the red light come on and stay on while I was cranking? I thought it would go out almost immediately…but it didn't. Confusing. So I can't report any recharging success of any kind. I didn't try the solar panel to recharge the unit so I can’t vouch for that. Overall, not a huge fan. Would it be better than nothing in an emergency? Yes it would be especially for the price-point. Would I recommend better, separate devices instead? Yes…I probably would.
