About this item
Description
Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain development and trauma expert, Dr. Bruce Perry, discuss the impact of trauma and adversity and how healing must begin with a shift to asking, "what happened to you?" rather than "what's wrong with you?"
Through deeply personal conversation, Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Perry explore how what happens to us in early childhood influences the people we become. They challenge us to shift from focusing on, "What's wrong with you?" or "Why are you behaving that way?," to asking, "What happened to you?" Many of us experience adversity that has lasting impact on our physical and emotional health. What happened to us in childhood is a powerful predictor of our risk for health problems down the road, and offers scientific insights in to the patterns of behaviors so many struggle to understand. Here, Winfrey shares stories from her own past, understanding through experience the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma at a young age. Joining forces with Dr. Perry, one of the world's leading experts on childhood trauma, Winfrey and Dr. Perry marry the power of storytelling with science and clinical experience to better understand and overcome the effects of trauma. In conversation throughout the book, the two focus on understanding people, behavior, and ourselves. It's a subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and it's one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our future--opening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way.Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)

Book was great, I just wish it would have expanded to tell us how to fix what’s wrong. For example I know I have trauma but how do I fix that trauma.

Loved this book. Someone who has dealt with trauma, I resonated perfectly. I’m a bit of a dinosaur still like physical books. Target price is reasonable. 30% off plus circle member = better discount.

This is a self development book that really opened my eyes to understanding myself and the brain a bit better. For anyone that has experienced some serious trauma, I highly recommend this book. I would also recommend it to anyone to gain the perspective and knowledge of how the brain works, especially during traumatic situations. Before judging others and asking “what is wrong with you?”, we must rather shift our perspective and ask “what happened to you?”, to begin the journey of understanding and healing.

Lots of interesting information. Some parts were a bit repetitive, but I'm really glad to have read it. Worth the time and money, for sure. Even if you didn't experience childhood trauma, this might help you understand the associated behaviors of others around you.

Great book to help open your mind as to why people are they way that they are. Helped me be more compassionate, mindful, & patient with others. Makes me realize too that they way people treat me or act towards me is really them & not so much me..
Truly life changing.

I am a fan of Oprah and have been for the better part of my life. I was curious because it was Oprah so I listened to it (which is actually easier because of the way the book is formatted). Point is, I will always reference this book, it was the catalyst I didnt know I needed to began true healing. I recommend this book to everyone.

This Is Really A Great Important Helpful Book, But The Print Is Way Too Small!

This is a great important helpful book, but as many customers on Amazon etc have said, the printing is ridiculously extremely small which makes it really difficult to read and Oprah's lines are in medium light blue which wouldn't be as much of a problem if the print wasn't so small and it's really the smallest print I have ever seen in a book!

One of the most important books I have read. The format threw me off at first, but once I got into it it didn’t bother me. My compassion for people has grown as well as my desire to understand what happened to me and what happened to you.
