T. Kkngfisher Fans- she's done it again!
T. Kingfisher fans will not be disappointed in Wolf Worm. This gothic horror novel plays with one of my own intense fears- bot flys, making it truly terrifying on another level. If you have any adverse feelings about bugs, blood, or general body invasiveness then perhaps rethink reading T.Kingfisher in general. Otherwise, power on good reader! I enjoyed this tale taking place in North Carolina and in 1899. The artist characteristic of the main character, Sonia, was fantastically well done. As an artist and a naturalist, Sonia often thinks about how to replicate colors, shapes and shades in her compositions. Reading her thought process as part of the story was an aspect I truly enjoyed. In terms of a horror tale, this one is slightly slow moving. While the questionable characters begin right away with a carriage ride to her destination, most of the action and unveiling take place in the last third or so of the novel. However, it is worth the wait and the build up is enjoyable with many guesses from Sonia on what is happening and how she might be aiding in horrific acts. The fantastical idea of bot flys and vampires is twisted and wonderful at the same time. The truly gross and terrifying images you build in your head are easy to create with Kingfisher's descriptions and pacing. Thank you to Macmillan Audio for allowing me to enjoy an early copy of the audiobook version of Wolf Worm, as narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal.
