Book Synopsis

Wreckers dismantles the familiar narratives of imperial conquest, revealing the violent, chaotic and improvised reality of empire-building between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries.

While figures such as Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan are celebrated for their maritime achievements, focusing solely on their successes distorts our understanding of the past. Many explorers ended up as castaways, clinging to the wreckage of their shattered ships, while those who survived often faced resistance, negotiation and ridicule from the Indigenous communities they encountered.

Drawing on maritime stories from across languages and continents, from Brazil and Southeast Africa to India and the Philippines, Simon Park tells dramatic tales of voyages gone wrong and the events on land that followed. These stories offer an alternative timeline for the century after Columbus's 1492 voyage and illuminate the fractures and tensions that accompanied the expanding reach of European ships.

Park shows that, despite their claims of superiority, European explorers were often driven by greed, rivalry and desperation, and their ventures were marked by miscalculation and failure. In the hunt for gold, Martin Frobisher transported tons of worthless rock across the Atlantic, believing it to be precious ore. In the search for spices, the ship of Portuguese captain Manuel de Sousa de Sepúlveda was so heavily laden that its cargo spilled into the sea when it wrecked off the coast of South Africa. Everywhere they travelled, Europeans depended heavily on local knowledge of languages, geography, food and medicine.

By focusing on stories of failure, defiance and unexpected outcomes, Wreckers reveals the precarious balance between ambitious European powers, local actors pursuing their own agendas and communities resisting foreign incursions. Both gripping and original, it challenges the idea of unstoppable European dominance and reimagines this turbulent period as a far more complex and contested history.

Review Quotes

'Rollicking but reflective account...an adroit storyteller'--Michael Prodger "New Statesman"

'Simon Park tells the dark, twisted, sometimes terrifying story behind the pageant we think we know: how Europeans went out to meet the world, 'discover' it and make their empires. He tells a story of lovers and cannibals, shipwrecks and mutinies and ruinous failures from a wide-angle view and a continent's worth of sources. His immaculate scholarship puts the risk and the blood back into what sometimes seems just a lifeless parade, the human story of discovery'--Michael Pye, author of The Edge of the World

An excellent account of voyages in the Age of Discovery, focussing on the complex reality in which shipwreck and disaster were as frequent as successful landfall. Superbly written, entertaining and compelling, this book should be read by anyone interested in this pivotal period in history--David Gibbins
