Labels commonly warn against using adhesive removers on delicate or porous materials such as suede, rubber, leather, silk and unfinished (untreated) wood. Many products also recommend pre-testing the remover on an inconspicuous area before full use.

Cotton adhesive tape remover pads are offered specifically for skin use. They’re typically latex-free, sized about 1.25 in. x 2.625 in., sold in packs (for example, packs of 100), and marketed as gentle to help reduce patient discomfort when removing medical tape.

Many removers are labeled for multi-surface use. Surfaces commonly listed include carpet, finished wood, sealed stone (including sealed granite), painted surfaces, glass, fabric, metals, plastics, ceramic and porcelain, and other hard surfaces such as chrome, concrete, countertops, fiberglass and formica.

Common scent options include orange/citrus (often labeled “original” citrus), pine, and products labeled simply as “scented.” (Specific fragrance names vary by brand.)

Formats include clinging spray-gels for vertical surfaces, adhesive pads applied to tape edges and along the adhesion line for skin/tape removal, and concentrated liquids that can be used full-strength or diluted with water.
