Common protection features noted are anti-dry (dry-run) protection, thermal overload protection, ETL listing/certification and waterproof ratings such as IP68. Some models also include check valves or foam filters to help prevent backflow and keep debris from entering the pump.
Many pumps provide adjustable flow control and directional outlets. Features include 180°-adjustable outlets, built-in control valves or knobs to change flow rate, and sets of interchangeable nozzles for different spray patterns or stream shapes.
Pumps are offered for fully submerged or inline use and many accept both vertical and horizontal placement. Small fountain or aquarium pumps commonly include suction cups or compact housings for stability, while larger units are plug-ready with long power cords for flexible placement. Some models are designed for simple drop-in use, others for inline mounting depending on the application.
These pumps are marketed for many water tasks: pond and fountain circulation, waterfalls, aquariums, hydroponics and garden irrigation, as well as household draining (basements, pools), pool-cover pumping and—on specialized models—deep-well water extraction.
Some higher-powered models explicitly list quiet operation at about 30–40 dB; other listings simply describe 'low-noise' or 'quiet' operation without a decibel figure. Expect that quieter, lower-power fountain and aquarium pumps will generally be less noisy than high-flow or well pumps, but check individual product specs for measured dB values when noise is critical.
