Best Grass Seed I've Used So Far

For 30 years I have had trouble keeping grass growing in our front yard. I've tried multiple grass seeds over the years just to be let down. After a lot of "review" reading and research on grass seeds for the North East in zone 6B and 7A I choose Pennington's Sun and Shade. Different sections of our lawn are in and out of the sun all day long. Pennington's Sun and Shade is a blend of Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue. Pictures 1 through 6 were taken on the same day, the Friday of Labor Day weekend 2024. Pictures 1 & 2 is what the lawn looked like after removing all the dead grass and before I started prepping. I started removing the dead grass in early August after every mowing. In total I probably raked out three wheelbarrow loads of dead grass over the course of August. Pictures 3 & 4 is a fresh rake of the yard to loosen up the dirt. I got lucky as there was a light rain early that morning so the soil was soft. Pictures 5 & 6 is how it looked after everything was completed. These are the steps I took. 1. Removed all dead grass and debris before hand. 2. Raked and loosened up the dirt. 3. Threw down fresh top soil on top of the loosened dirt. 4. Thew down starter fertilizer by hand. 5. Thew down grass seed. Seed is a blue/green so it's easy to see where you are placing it and how much. 6. Thew down peat moss over the whole yard. 7. Used the sprinkler system to wet everything down. 8. Set the sprinklers to come on for 10 minutes every morning at 5am and every night at 6pm. I saw seedlings within 5 days. Pictures 7 & 8 were taken yesterday afternoon 18 days after seeding. I ran out of seeds and thew down some Scotts EZ Seed in the back corner and it did not come up as nice or as full as the Pennington's. So far I'm very happy with the process. I'm praying that this grass will make strong roots and last through next summer. Only time will tell.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

I had a few bare spots in my front lawn that needed to be fixed. I followed the directions precisely. I used this product on one of the bare spots and another brands product on the other bare spots to compare the 2 products. The spots where the Pennington Sun & Shade seed was planted, is nothing but weeds! Not even a little grass has grown!! I tried reaching out to the company to get a refund because their bag states they guarantee their products work or your money back, but this still isn't resolved! I did a ton of research before picking a brand to go with because I cannot afford to waste any money. But that's what I ultimately did with this purchase was just threw my money away! So if someone from the company could direct me on how to make a claim against the products guarantee, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Nothing but weeds

I purchased this to patch a small area of my front yard. I first filled the area with a quality topsoil, spread the seed (I also used a rapid seed since i was planting on a slope) and covered the area with about a quarter inch of starter soil. I have more weeds coming up then grass with this seed ( i did not have 1 weed with the rapid seed). I have a second area that I am doing and threw this seed away and purchased a different seed with how disappointed I am with this seed.

Weeds not grass

I must say, I had an incredibly disappointing experience with the Pennington Tall Fescue Grass Seed. It was, without a doubt, the worst grass seed I have ever used. I followed all the instructions diligently, planting it in late spring when the weather wasn't scorching hot and watering it twice a day as recommended. However, it took over a month for any signs of germination to appear, which was already frustrating. To my dismay, the results were far from what I had hoped for. Instead of a lush, green lawn, I now have half of my yard filled with stubborn weeds and the other half just barren dirt patches. It's incredibly disheartening to put in so much effort and money, only to end up with such a dismal outcome. Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied with the Pennington Tall Fescue Grass Seed. It failed to deliver on its promises, and I am left with a patchy mess instead of the beautiful lawn I envisioned. I will definitely be looking for a different grass seed brand in the future. Not happy at all with this purchase.

I didn't all my homework and still got an "F"!

I bought two 20# bags of their "Sun & Shade" Grass Seed. That should be "Penningtons' Weed Seed" at best . . . After months of research locally and with Pennington I purchased their "Sun & Shade Smart Seed". Scraped, Scarified and spread 3-4" of "organic matter" then rototilled it in and planted. 3 years later, I have a front yard that is a wasteland with an over abundance of weeds that I have never had. Including a species that our County Extension Agent says is not indigenous to our area. A patch that didn't get planted is looking very nice with the 60 year old original grass. The Back Yard the was prepped, but not planted the old grass came back, with less weeds, better than the newly planted Pennington seed. It does not work. Although their Website, Old & "New" Packaging (new packaging means an attempt at an image update), Lot Label, Ads . . . profess a gorgeous lush lawn, the CRSs & Seed Guys say completely another . . . now. I was treated like I was nutz expecting a nice somewhat established lawn in 3 years. They were not willing to acknowledge nor stand behind the guarantee that's printed right on the bag. Right now the Pennington planted areas are almost bare except for patches of weeds. A few are more like continents of weeds. Strange though all the negative reviews, which there are many, are all basically the same AND just like mine. Now that I have reseed my lawn allover again, I found a seed company just south of me that has what Pennington promised at half the price. When I called to get more information, the guy I talked to just laughed when I mentioned Pennington. He said, "Sorry you had to go through that, but we'll take care of you and guarantee our product." Always Buy Local.

I would not buy this

We had many large bare spots in our lawn. We bought a rear tine rototiller. It went deep to til the soil. We then added top soil and incorporated it in. Planted the seed in early April, in western NC, 3 20 lb bags.Totally about $200.00. Took a while to sprout, watered as directed. Looked good for a couple of weeks after it sprouted. We did have a dry spell, but seed says drought resistant? We kept watering. I don't know if it went dormant, but we have had a lot of rain the past 2 weeks. It was a lot of work and a lot of money and it looks like it did before we planted and followed all directions.

My lawn is coming along great with using this seed.

Seems to have a good blend of grass seed that look great once you get them growing. I'm a renter in a 2 family home and to keep rent down I took on all the care and maintenance around the property. I think working outside on the lawn is fun and I want it to look the best it can, for as little money as possible. The lawn was previously not well cared for, basically just mowed once in awhile. I decided to top dress and overseed the lawn, so thats what I did. My lawn is pretty small, with the front, side and back equaling around 1,000sf. I have no idea what kind of grass it is originally except some of it looks like maybe Kentucky 31 or some type of forage fescue which I dont like. I tried to dig out alot of it but still some remains. I raked out all the dead brown grass and thatch and filled in low spots and topdressed with peat moss, just a thin layer. I spread this sun and shade seed all around with just a hand held broadcaster which worked well in my situation. I had some issues with flocks of little birds feasting in the yard, so those areas I spread more seed then a little more peatmoss over the seed, just to hide the seed but to have the seed almost showing. I made sure to water the lawn at least in the morning, then in the afternoon if it needed it. I got lucky and had rain a few days in a row, then a day or two after the weather got better I noticed new grass growing everywhere. From then it got thicker every day until most areas filled in. I used a soil test kit from the hardware store to see where the PH and NPK levels were at in the soil and it showed it was very low in nitrogen and phosphorus while potassium was ok, also the PH was around 5.5. I put down some fast acting lime along with some fertilizer I had mixed together to give the lawn the right amounts of what it hopefully needed, basically mixed regular lawn fertilizer with some starter fertilizer at a specific ratio I came up with. The lawn is looking better and better daily now.

14 days in and good sprouting and coverage so far!

I used the Smart Seed - Sun and Shade in a small, mostly bare back yard beneath two tall maples and soil riddled with tree roots. Seeded on April 11 in Rhode Island and by April 29th I have pretty good coverage with new grass shoots. I followed the instructions, did some light raking to prep the soil and rake in the new seed, spread a light layer of peat moss, and have watered every day. I have never grown a lawn before and though it would be much more difficult, but so far things are going well. This yard was a complete wreck when I started, but is already looking a whole lot better! For people who are beginners like me, I would also recommend checking out YouTube for more helpful tricks and tips for over-seeding or starting a lawn.

$180 for nothing

Bought a big bag of the KY 31 at the local Rural King. Overseeded my 2000 sq ft aerated lawn in the spring of 2022. Watered exactly as recommended. No growth at all. No germination to speak of. Did the same thing at the optimal time this past fall. This time my neighbor and I seeded our yards at the same time. Same terrible results for Pennington and me while my neighbor used a cheaper brand and had very good results. I wish I could get a refund now. Cannot recommend Pennington.

Far exceeded expectations

This product has worked far better than I anticipated. The bare spots in my lawn have filled in completely in less than 4 weeks. I watered twice daily for 5-10 minutes and waited to spread the seed until temperatures dropped to the 70-85 range in the fall.

One of the Best Grass Seed on market.

Purchased a 7lb bag to use and to my surprise, within 7-10 days the seeds were sprouting and I now have a yard that is nicely filled in. I followed the instructions on bag and I will purchase more bags in the near future. I tried other name brands in the past with no results.

My grass was not sun tolerant..

For some reason my grass began to die when temperature got in to high 90s ..my grass turned brown even watering it every other day..It was beautiful until it got hot..pretty green grass..it's planted since March and this is July. I don't know what's wrong..it says it is good in sun and shade..drought resistant..olive in East Texas ...I made sure I bought right grass for this area.

Don't buy, does not work

This product does not work. After three weeks of care, and watering barely a blade of grass grew. Not I'm out time, money and still no grass.

Hello! There are many things that can affect germination, temperatures during planting being one of them. We would typically not recommend seeding a cool season grass in the summer due to high temperatures. Please reach out to Customer Service at 1-800-285-7333 so we can discuss further!

Torn

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm torn between this. We utilized this prior to our backyard being graded and the grass was growing quickly but we had quite a few weeds. The weeks following our yard was graded and the grass is growing back...but so are the weeds. I'm torn on this product!

Works Good

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We planted this seed in an area that died during the wintertime. The application was easy, and germination was quick. We had a lot of empty spaces though in the grass itself. Maybe over time, it will fill in better.
