Q: Is it safe for babies with eczema?

submitted by - 1 year ago
  • A: Thank you for contacting Dr. Bronner's! We greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with us as we take the health and safety of our customers very seriously. While we do not make any products specifically for sensitive skin, many of our soaps work very well for those with skin sensitivities. Here is a list of our soaps from least to most moisturizing: Pure-Castile Liquid, Pure-Castile Bar, and Organic Sugar Soap. We have received very positive comments regarding our Baby Unscented and Tea Tree soaps from our customers with skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, oily skin, or general skin sensitivities. However, we all have different skin, so we would advise first trying our product on a small area of your babies skin to be sure that it will work for them. Rest assured, our products have been tested and deemed safe in toxicological assessments, below the safety limits suggested by the governing authorities. However, please note that all fragrance oils are composed of constituents that may cause skin irritation for some, particularly in sensitive areas. With that in mind, rest assured that our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap, or any of our milder scents such as Almond or Lavender, are great for young children and kids! When taking a bath, add a capful of soap into the bath water and let them soak. When bathing babies, we recommend using our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap as it contains no essential oils and almost double the olive oil, making it perfect for washing your child's face, body, and hair. Just add a few drops (2 – 3) to a damp washcloth to easily maintain control of the soap as no true soap is tear-free, so it's important to keep soap out of the eyes. The “tear-free" characteristic can only be achieved with synthetic non-soap detergents and is not something we're able to do given the all-natural formulation of our soaps. To read more about bathing babies with our Pure-Castile Soap, head over to Lisa Bronner's blog post, Using Castile Baby Mild Soap on Babies (https://www.lisabronner.com/using-castile-baby-mild-soap-on-babies/). Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!

Q: Can this be used as shampoo for hair. Thx.

submitted by Joe - 5 months ago
  • A: Hi, thank you for contacting Dr. Bronner’s! Our Soaps work exceptionally well to clean hair; however, the process may require a bit of tinkering to fit your specific needs. We encourage you to use this as a guide and to tweak anything we recommend to best fit your desired outcome. If there’s one important thing to remember about washing your hair with Dr. Bronner’s before washing, it’s that we strongly encourage you to follow up with an acidic rinse. Due to the alkalinity of our soap, they can leave a tangly look and feel. An acidic rinse not only conditions your hair but also can tamp down the cuticles in your hair and give it a smooth and silky after-feel. We recommend using our conditioning Organic Hair Rinse, which is specially formulated for this purpose and uses a base of organic lemon juice, but you may easily substitute it for a vinegar or lemon juice dilution. If you are interested in these alternatives, we encourage you to use them in a spray bottle for the most control and ease of use. We recommend diluting any kind of vinegar with equal parts water, at a 1:1 ratio, and diluting one part lemon juice with two parts water at a 1:2 ratio due to its higher acidity. Additionally, be sure to strain and properly store your lemon juice as it is not a shelf-stable ingredient. To learn more about shampooing with our soaps, please check out our definitive guide on drbornner.com or Lisa Bronner’s amazing blog post, From Shampoo to Soap – My Story (https://www.lisabronner.com/from-shampoo-to-soap-my-story/). Here are the instructions from our website: 1) Shampoo with your favorite Dr. Bronner’s soap (Castile or Sugar Soap), and rinse this off. There is no need to dilute even if you are using our Pure-Castile Liquid Soap. Just start with a dime-sized amount in your palm and lather it into your hair. The water present in the shower is enough to dilute the applied soap. 2) Important: Rinsing with our Organic Hair Rinse (after rinsing the soap out), results in a spectacular look and feel! Just stir 1- 2 capfuls of this rinse into a cup of water, close your eyes, and slowly pour while massaging into your hair. Keep hand-combing your hair until hair feels entirely sleek (~30 seconds). Rinse out well. Repeat, if necessary, in extra hard water conditions or with longer hair. As mentioned above, you may substitute this for any other acidic rinse. Just be sure that all of the soap has been rinsed out of our hair before applying. 3) Optional: Either after rinsing your hair or after drying lightly with a towel, massage in our Organic Hair Crème for added silkiness and softness. You can decide to rinse this product out like a traditional conditioner, or you can use it as a leave-in conditioner/styling crème. Again, using our soaps as shampoos can be a long process for some people, as your hair needs to adapt to using a true soap since this product is not a shampoo. It can take a lot of trial and error and tinkering with the dilutions. However, if this is simply not compatible with your hair, then it may not be for you. Please rest assured that you do not have to dilute the soaps when using them as a shampoo or body wash. However, you can use a dilution ratio of 1:3 (1 part soap to 3 parts water), to get started and adjust to your personal preference. Also, when diluting our soaps, we recommend that you use the dilution up within the first 2 weeks to a month. This is because we do not use any harsh preservatives that will allow the soap to last much longer than 1 month after being diluted. Distilled water is recommended. Lastly, please note that if you have color-treated hair, we do not recommend that you use our soaps. We know this was a lot of information to throw at you, so if you have any future questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Q: Do you have to use a foam dispenser for this soap (rather than a liquid soap dispenser)?

submitted by Soap - 9 months ago
  • A: Hi, Thank you for reaching out to us at Dr. Bronner's! While you can dilute our Pure-Castile Liquid soap, rest assured that this is not necessary for all uses and mostly comes down to preference. For example, some may prefer just pouring a few drops into their hands for handwashing, and others may prefer to dilute our soap at a 1:3 ratio in a foaming pump. It's truly up to you and your needs. Due to our Pure-Castile Liquid Soaps being very concentrated, they do not work well in pump dispensers. We have tested a variety of pumps and dilutions over the years with little success. Inevitably, the pumps always clog. Instead, we would recommend keeping the soap in its original bottle and using just a drop or two for each handwashing or whatever use you desire. While our Pure-Castile Liquid Soap does not work well with pump dispensers, they do work great in foaming dispensers. Foaming dispensers “thicken” the soap with water and air. If you decide to use a foaming dispenser, make sure to dilute the soap at a ratio of 1 part soap to 3 parts water. This dilution doesn’t create the issues with clogging that undiluted soap would. Suggested ratio example: 8 oz. bottle = 2 oz. soap and 6 oz. water 12 oz. bottle = 3 oz. soap and 9 oz. water Just keep in mind that diluting our soap with water does reduce its shelf life as we do not add any harsh preservatives to our products. Generally, diluting with tap or filtered water results in a shelf life of about 2 weeks to a month, while dilutions with distilled water can last up to 6 months. Using distilled water can also reduce natural soap separation that may occur with hard water. If you prefer not to dilute your soap, we recommend trying our Organic Sugar Soaps. They do not encounter the same pump issues and even come with a pump dispenser. However, they are specifically formulated for bodily use and may not have the versatility that our Pure-Castile soaps do. Should you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know. All the best!

Q: Is this soap anti bacterial?

submitted by Hi there - 10 months ago
  • A: Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Bronner's! Soap that is labeled “antibacterial” means that active antimicrobial ingredients have been added to it. At this time, none of our soaps or cleaning products contain these specific ingredients; therefore, we do not label them as “antibacterial.” However, the US Food and Drug Administration published a report indicating that soap and water are just as effective at mechanically removing microbes as antibacterial soap is at killing microbes. Also, keep in mind that antibacterial soap can also kill good microbes along with the bad, often containing known toxins such as triclosan. For these reasons, we believe our soap is safer and more effective than an antibacterial agent, even though it is not labeled as such. For more information on this topic, we encourage you to check out Lisa Bronner’s blog post Ditch the Antibacterial: Soap Is All You Need (https://www.lisabronner.com/ditch-the-antibacterial-soap-is-all-you-need/). Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know!

Q: Hello, I’ve read positive reviews about this soap, but since I’m in the U.S. Army and subject to drug testing, I’m wondering if it could impact my test results.

submitted by Rayy - 11 months ago
  • A: Hi, thank you for reaching out to us! While there can be minute traces of THC (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) found in our products, rest assured that none of our products, including our soaps, can make you test positive for a drug test. Here is some data to back this up. A desktop study conducted in 2001 for Dr. Bronner's and other hemp product companies, funded by the Agri-Food Research and Development Initiative of the Canadian provincial government in Manitoba, determined that during typical daily use of cosmetics containing hemp seed oil on healthy skin, THC uptake was less than 1 μg (microgram). Even assuming the inadvertent and complete ingestion of applied lip balm (applied to lips 5 times/day at 0.015 g/application = 0.075 g total), the uptake was less than 1 μg/day. By comparison, the minimum THC dose required to produce a positive urine test for marijuana is 500 μg/day, or more than 500 times that quantity. A typical minimum THC dose required to achieve a high in recreational use ranges from 1 to 10 mg/day, i.e., no less than 1,000 times the amount present in applied lip balm during daily intended use. Although this study focuses on our balm as it has a higher chance of being ingested, it suggests that any potential THC uptake due to the use of Dr. Bronner's products is far too low to cause psychotropic effects or a positive drug test. Additionally, Dr. Bronner's has signed the Test Pledge, which means that we comply with specifically required limits for the presence of THC in the hemp oil that we use. Here is a quote from this pledge that we feel summarizes it best: "No significant transdermal absorption of THC would occur even in a worst-case scenario of highly compromised skin, full-body application of hemp oil, and 10 ppm THC in the hemp oil (the maximum limit allowed by Canadian law). THC absorption from body care products is extremely inefficient and is non-significant as an additive factor alongside hemp food consumption even from unrealistically extensive use of these body care products. Thus, Test Pledge requires that hemp body care companies signing the Test Pledge observe the current Canadian 10 ppm limit for THC." Lastly, we use less than 3% of organic hemp seed oil in our product formulations, which is a very small amount. As mentioned above, if there were trace amounts of CBD or THC, they would be extremely minute to the point that they are practically almost non-existent. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Like that it is unscented. I make up my own foaming hand soaps and add essential oils. Love that it’s better for the environment and I can mix my own strength.

Super thin & watery :(

This is my first time trying this soap. I love the company but have previously only used the bar soaps, and wanted to try the liquid to compare. It says you're supposed to dilute this soap, but if I added any more water to it I don't know if it would even be soap anymore. It's MUCH more watered down than I expected it to be, to the point that I wouldn't consider this a concentrate. I bought it directly from the website. Seems to work ok once you work it to a lather, but it's way too thin for my preference and doesn't stay where you put it because it has the consistency of water, not traditional liquid/gel soap. Also smells a little like cooking oil, but that's probably from the olive oil. Overall, might work ok for some things but I don't think I'd get it again to use as a body wash.

Amazing product!

I got this product from my niece for my 89 yr old mom to try who had recurring urinary tract infections. My niece had the same issue until she started using magic soap for feminine hygiene. UTI'S gone! It appears to be working for mom too as her symptoms have not come back after antibiotic treatment this time. You only need 3-4 drops to soap your wrag. You feel and smell so fresh and clean afterwards. I was blown away when I used it to wash moms hair. The soap made her hair extremely soft and easy to comb. This is a most have!

DO NOT USE ON KIDS

Do not use this on your kids. We used this soap during bath time and it got in our toddler’s eyes by accident. Toddler was screaming for twenty minutes and eyes had to be flushed out multiple times. Completely traumatizing event to say the least.
