OINTMENT VS CREAM - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
There are three main types of moisturizers: lotions, creams, and ointments. Generally speaking, lotions tend to be the most lightweight moisturizer option, followed by creams, and then ointments—which are usually the thickest and most occlusive. Many people with dry skin choose to include both creams and ointments in their skincare routine. For example, you can apply CeraVe Moisturizing Cream first to help relieve dry skin all over your face and body. Next, CeraVe Healing Ointment can be applied to help provide soothing benefits and targeted relief for chafed or cracked areas (such as chapped lips, cracked heels, and dry hands).

Q: Is this non-comedogenic?

submitted by M - 1 year ago
  • A: Hello M! The term non-comedogenic indicates that the product has a low potential for clogging pores. The presence or absence of oil in a product does not mean a product will or will not be non-comedogenic. Not all products are tested for non-comedogenicity. If the non-comedogenic claim does not appear on the product, it is not an indication the product is comedogenic.

Q: Can this be used on my back

submitted by Amy Gerhart - 2 months ago
  • A: Hello Amy Gerhart. Great question! Yes, CeraVe Healing Ointment can generally be used on your back, especially if you have very dry, chapped, or compromised skin that needs intensive moisture protection. Because petrolatum creates a protective barrier to lock in hydration, it's great for dry patches on the body. However, since petrolatum is very rich and occlusive, keep a few things in mind if you're applying it to your back: Acne-Prone Skin: If your back is prone to body breakouts or acne, heavy ointments can sometimes trap sweat and oil, potentially clogging pores. Application: A little goes a long way, and applying it to slightly damp skin can help lock in moisture even better. We hope this information is helpful and you can use our products with great success! Thank you for your interest in CeraVe!

Q: Can this be used on a sunburn?

submitted by Sunny - 5 months ago
  • A: Hello Sunny. Thank you for your interest in CeraVe Healing Ointment. Using CeraVe Healing Ointment on a fresh sunburn is not recommended because it can trap heat and worsen the pain. However, it can be highly beneficial once the burn has cooled down and entered the peeling phase. We hope this information is helpful. Thank you again for taking the time to reach out.

Q: Can it be used on testicles?

submitted by Curious - 10 months ago
  • A: Hello there. Our Healing Ointment is a wonderfully versatile product, designed to protect and soothe compromised skin. It's formulated to temporarily protect minor cuts, scrapes, and burns, and to relieve chapped or cracked skin. It can be applied generously to areas of dry, chapped, or irritated skin to help restore the skin's barrier and provide lasting moisture. For any specific medical concerns or questions about using the ointment on sensitive areas, we always recommend consulting with a healthcare professional to ensure it's the right choice for your individual needs.

Q: Can this be used on eyelids?

submitted by Ness - 10 months ago
  • A: Hello Ness! Thank you for asking about using our Healing Ointment on your eyelids. Our CeraVe Healing Ointment is specifically formulated to protect, soothe, and hydrate very dry, chafed, or cracked skin, helping to restore the skin's natural barrier with ingredients like petrolatum, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid. It is a very rich and emollient product. The skin around the eyes, especially the eyelids, is exceptionally delicate and sensitive. While the ointment is designed to be gentle and non-irritating, we always recommend exercising caution when applying any product directly to the eyelid area. For precise guidance and to ensure it's suitable for your specific needs, particularly given the sensitivity of the eyelids, we advise consulting with a dermatologist or healthcare professional. They can provide the best recommendation for using products in such a delicate area.

Q: What’s the difference between this and the Cerave Baby Healing Ointment?

submitted by Mzthang - 2 years ago
  • A: Hello Mzthang! The key difference between CeraVe Healing Ointment and CeraVe Baby Healing Ointment lies in their intended use and slight formulation variations. While both ointments share a similar base of petrolatum and ceramides to protect and hydrate the skin, the Baby Healing Ointment is specifically formulated for babies' delicate skin and may be slightly gentler. The standard Healing Ointment is suitable for a wider range of skin concerns and can be used by people of all ages, particularly for dry, cracked, or irritated skin. Both are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic but consider the baby version for extra sensitive skin. Checking the full ingredient list on each product can further clarify any differences.

The Cerave Healing Ointment has garnered mixed feedback, with many guests praising its effectiveness in treating dry skin, eczema, and chapped lips. The product is noted for its thick, protective texture that locks in moisture and is suitable for sensitive skin. However, some guests express disappointment with the new formula, feeling it is greasier and less effective than the previous version. Despite this, many still find it a staple in their skincare routine for its versatility and healing properties.

Works great and fixes cracked skin lips even helps with tattoos

The jar is Magic in a tub and it has so many different uses. You can even put it on tattoos when you first get a new tattoo, but it also works great for lips for cracked hands for cracked skin. A little of this every night and I wake up healed. It’s thick like you would expect from an ointment, but that’s the point it locks in moisture and just…. Fixes things. No fragrance nonsense unless you want to add your own scent to it. I keep it in the bathroom. I keep some by my bed because my lips get dry and I keep some in the kitchen for when my hands get cracked from the Arizona heat.

    A go-to product!!

This is absolutely amazing! This is like my fifth tube of this stuff, and I use it all the time. My face is super dry and acne prone and eczema prone, and this soothes my irritation without breaking me out. I also use it as Chapstick in my nightly and morning routine, and it is so easy to use and my favorite product. Also such a good price compared to high-end lip products!

This healing ointment works very well. I put it on any dry skin and over night it feels a lot softer. I like the squeeze tube packaging because it is really easy to get out of the bottle. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who gets dry skin!

You have aiways had a wonderful product that I have used for years but this new formula is awful! Greasy, sticky, doesn’t absorb. I don’t understand why you had to change a great thing. I might as well just use Vaseline. Such a let down.

    Disappointed in reformulation

Very disappointed with the reformulation. The old product was the only solution to my dry lips that didn’t leave them feeling more dry after absorption. I ordered a new one when I ran out and it was this new formula. When I used it it felt stickier on my lips than the old one. And once it absorbed after a while, it left my lips feeling even drier. Very disappointing. Will not be buying again. Please bring back the old formula.

Great for sensitive, dry, itchy skin

This worked much better on my dry, cracked, and itchy hand skin than Vaseline, Aquaphor, Aveda, coconut oil, and other CeraVe products. In less than 2 days I noticed a HUGE difference with this CeraVe.

New formulation is damaging to skin

New formulation is irritating. New and improved means "cheaper to manufacture", probably. I won't be buying this product again unless the formulation is changed back. Also, the website hasn't even been updated with the new ingredients, so you don't find out you're getting a different formulation until it arrives at your house. Bait and switch.

Great for eczema and dry , sensitive.

I used this ointment daily for my son who has eczema and it really helps keep his skin moisturized and protected. It’s thick but it works very well to lock in moisture, especially on dry or irritated areas. I like that it’s fragrance free and gentle on sensitive skin. I usually apply it after his bath and it helps soothe his skin overnight.

    Not new / improved

I just bought more of the ointment after running out that I use daily all over my body, including sensitive areas. I noticed it was different when I opened the jar and the formula is sticky and tacky and does not glide even warming it in my fingers does not produce the same result as the old formula. I never understand why companies have to improve on things that have been working for so many people for so long. I want to return this product but I can’t because I opened it and used it. Now will search for an alternative. It would be nice to offer the old AND new formulas instead of forcing customers to use the new when it worked so well when other things didn’t.

Hello Mandy! We are so sorry to hear that the updated texture of the CeraVe Healing Ointment has been disappointing and difficult to work with compared to the version you relied on daily. A helpful tip when working with a rich ointment is to apply a very small amount directly onto damp skin immediately after bathing to help the formula glide and spread more smoothly across the body. We truly value your long-time loyalty, and your candid feedback regarding the formula has been shared directly with our product development team.

    "improved" aka ruined

I am not someone that normally writes reviews but as someone that has loved and sworn by this product and used it every day for years the "new and improved" formula is awful. it is immediately obvious that the formula has changed because it is significantly sticker than it was and even just at a glance is shinier. it used to feel luxurious and hydrating but not as greasy as aquaphor or vaseline and now it had been completely ruined. extremely disappointed and now looking for alternatives. don't "fix" what isn't broken. hope you get it together at the company because changing a proven product to be worse in every way isn't a good sign for whatever products they decide to "improve" best
