OINTMENT VS CREAM - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
There are three main types of moisturizers: lotions, creams, and ointments. Generally speaking, lotions tend to be the most lightweight moisturizer option, followed by creams, and then ointments—which are usually the thickest and most occlusive. Many people with dry skin choose to include both creams and ointments in their skincare routine. For example, you can apply CeraVe Moisturizing Cream first to help relieve dry skin all over your face and body. Next, CeraVe Healing Ointment can be applied to help provide soothing benefits and targeted relief for chafed or cracked areas (such as chapped lips, cracked heels, and dry hands).

  • A: Hello Donught! Thank you for your question about our Healing Ointment and your father's preference regarding texture. Our CeraVe Healing Ointment is formulated to provide intensive hydration and help protect and soothe extremely dry, chafed, or cracked skin. It creates a protective barrier on the skin's surface to lock in moisture and support the skin's natural healing process. Due to its occlusive nature, designed for deep hydration and protection, it does have a rich and emollient feel. While it is designed to absorb over time to deliver its benefits, its initial application creates a noticeable layer on the skin, which some individuals might perceive as having a more substantial or "greasy" texture compared to a lightweight lotion. We understand that personal preferences for texture, especially for those with sensitive skin or particular comfort needs, are very important.

Q: Does this product contain steroids?

  • A: Hello there! Thank you for your interest in our Healing Ointment. All the ingredients we use in a product are listed on the package or the label of the product itself. Q: is petrolatum in cera view petroleum based

submitted by Iscore - 3 months ago
  • A: Hello Iscore. Thank you for your interest in CeraVe Healing Ointment Skin Protectant, Sooths Dry, Cracked and Chafed Skin, Non-Greasy Unscented. The petrolatum (petroleum) used in CeraVe Healing Ointment is sourced and processed according to L’Oréal’s strict global safety and sustainability standards. While the specific name of the commercial supplier is proprietary, the sourcing and quality adhere to specific standards. Petrolatum is a derivative of petroleum; it is a purified mixture of mineral oils and waxes. During petroleum refinement, a byproduct of the distillation step is petrolatum residuum. This residuum is further refined and purified to produce petrolatum. Petrolatum is an occlusive agent (forms a barrier on the skin’s surface) and an emollient. These benefits mean that petrolatum helps keep dry skin hydrated by reducing TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and soft/supple by filling in spaces between dry cells in the skin’s outermost layers. The FDA recognizes petrolatum (at levels >30%) as a skin protectant that temporarily protects and helps relieve chafed, chapped or cracked skin. We hope this information is helpful and that you will try our products soon. Thank you again for your interest in CeraVe.

Q: Does this product sting the skin when applied?

submitted by Cheryl - 4 months ago
  • A: Hello Cheryl! No, the Healing Ointment is developed with three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help restore the skin's natural protective barrier and provide deep, long-wear hydration without causing stinging or irritation. This petrolatum-based formula is designed for dry, cracked, and irritated skin to be a gentle and soothing barrier for all skin types. A helpful tip is to apply a thin, even layer of the healing ointment to clean, dry skin on the affected areas and follow with a non-comedogenic moisturizer if needed. Because this ointment is fragrance-free and provides deep, long-wear moisture, it ensures that your skin remains nourished and protected from potential irritations from the environment throughout the day. We look forward to providing you with the reliable moisture and barrier support you need for your daily skincare.

    Consistency of glue

The "new improved" product is way too thick. Hate it! Loved the old product. Bought it all the time. Now I'm hunting down the "old" product. Please revert back to this one.

Hello there! We are so sorry to hear that the texture of the Healing Ointment isn't meeting your expectations and that you miss the classic feel you grew to love. We know how frustrating it is when a go-to favorite feels different, and we truly appreciate your honest feedback. To help ease application with a thicker, petrolatum-based ointment, try rubbing a small amount between warm fingertips for a few seconds before applying; warming the product helps it spread much more smoothly and evenly across dry skin without pulling. Your experience and preferences are incredibly important to our formulation team, and we will certainly share your feedback regarding the texture change directly with them.

    Miserable upgraded new formula.

Cerave!! What have you done?? At first I thought I got a bad batch of your ointment, then I saw the label! This is NOT an improvement!! It does not absorb as well, difficult to spread and apply and it leaves my skin tacky feeling! I’ve used your ointment for over a decade and this is terribly disappointing!!

    They Ruined It

Used to be amazing. The "new and improved" formula is AWFUL. So sticky, feels revolting on skin. Nothing like it used to be. Insane decision.

Hello Allie! We are so sorry to hear that the texture of our Healing Ointment did not meet your expectations, especially since you have been such a loyal fan of the formula. While we have not changed the active ingredients or the soothing, protective benefits of our ointment, we always want your experience to feel comfortable and comforting on your skin. Because this formula is exceptionally rich in petrolatum and ceramides to lock in deep moisture, we recommend applying just a tiny, pea-sized amount and warming it between your palms first to help it slide on smoothly. Pressing it gently into damp skin rather than rubbing it on can also help it absorb more quickly and significantly reduce any sticky feeling.

    NOT "new and improved"! Horrible!

This used to be an absolute staple product in my skin care. It was the only ointment I could and would use. However, this so-called "new and improved" formula is NOT that at all! It's absolutely horrible. This is the texture and consistency of glue. It doesn't spread, it doesn't absorb, and it irritates my skin. It's gooey, tacky, and not anything I'm willing to put anywhere at all on my body, let alone my skin. It's thick, but not in the good way. I may not like the feel of Vaseline, but I'll use that any day over this! I once recommended this ointment to everyone I knew. Now I will no longer recommend it to anyone at all.

Cereve oitment is superior to many others out there!

This healing ointment works wonders! You can use it for literally anything!! I use this religiously on my lips, cuticles, dry skin spots on my face, scrapes that my kids get, and on my heels when they are really dry!! Once applied it does last longer than other similar products. This consistency seems a little thicker too which I appreciate because it locks in moisture better. There is no scent and I just really love this oitment! I have repurchased several times and will continue to do so!

    Signed, sealed, delivered!

I'm new to this product so when I read a lot of reviews saying the new and improved version was not better than the original I was skeptical about the new and improved version plus I purchased it mistakenly thinking it was a 'cream'. Either way it is healing my daughter's eczema spots that were not getting any better. Improvement in just a few days and steadily getting better. So I tried it on my very sensitive skin, from my neck down to my toes. I use a small amount as a final step after my lotion. My skin was not particularly dry but it now feels baby soft and smooth as can be. I keep touching my skin because I'm in awe of how much smoother it feels and it was not rough or dry to begin with but obviously lacking something since I feel smoother than I ever have. I use it after every hand wash and for sure my hands needed the moisture because I wash my hands a lot. I see improvement in texture and my cuticles look fantastic. Finally I decided to use as a final step on my face, I was reluctant because the skin on my face is sensitive to most moisturizers, well I'm sold, it has not irritated my skin in the least. As far as users saying it is greasy, I use a small amount, it doesn't take much and I take time to rub it in throughly, so it leaves a layer of moisture and glow, and I do not feel greasy at all. This product is going to be a staple in my family's skin care routine replacing Aquaphor which never really did much but make my skin look shiny.

    Great for eczema

Love love love this ointment…As a mom to a 2 year old with eczema this stuff is a lifesaver. It heals dry and cracked skin, it seals in moisture and it lasts for a while. It is a bit greasy but it’s an ointment so that’s expected. My little one’s eczema usually leaves marks but I apply this and the spots start fading within a week and the tub is a nice size so it usually lasts well over a month using it everyday.

    (no review title)

To be honest yes the old one feels more light on the skin but I had to use it couple times, I have a son with super dry skin and eczema and I love this “thickness” because it last longer so the longer the better absorption. What I personally do is put a good amount in my hands, rub it and then apply it to him and feels easy as the old one. Now I just do morning and night and it keep the whole day moisturizing

A must have for repairing and protecting dry, sensitive skin.

I’vee been using the CeraVe Healing Ointment on dry, irritated areas, and it has made a noticeable difference. The texture is rich and protective without feeling overly heavy, and a little goes and long way. It helps soothe dry patches, cracked skin, and chapped lips, specially overnight. I also like that it’s fragrance free , gentle on sensitive skin, and doesn’t cause irritation. My skin feels softer , smoother , and stays moisturized for hours. If you’re looking for a reliable ointment to protect and repair dry skin , this is definitely worth trying.

    Bring Back the Old Formula

This was my holy grail for my severe dry skin on my face. I used it several times a day. Now, the new formula is very sticky and tacky, and it doesn't spread. It stays on the surface of skin and it feels SO HEAVY. I feel like I have glue on my face. You could not feel a thing with the old formula. I am so sad that the old formula is gone.
1 reply from Consumer Care Center team - 2 months ago
Hi there, thank you for reaching out about CeraVe Healing Ointment. Hearing from a dedicated user who considered this ointment their holy grail is incredibly important, and it is truly disappointing to hear that the new texture feels heavy and sticky on your skin. To help improve the spreadability of this rich, petrolatum-based protective barrier and prevent a tacky feel, try warming a tiny, pea-sized amount between clean, warm fingertips for a few seconds before applying. This quick step helps soften the ointment, allowing it to glide on in a much thinner, lighter layer that can comfortably seal in moisture without feeling like glue on the face.

    New Formula is just awful

The new formula is terrible. It has the texture of a melted gluestick, and does not spread easily, and does not feel good on the skin at all. I will be looking for alternatives. I've been using Cerave for years, and they really messed up with this change. Degree did this with their deodorant 2 years ago, and eneded up reverting back to the original formula. Hopefully Cerave will see their mistake and do the same.

Hi there, thank you for reaching out about our Healing Ointment. Hearing from a loyal, long-time user is incredibly important, and it is truly disappointing to learn that this experience with the texture fell short of expectations. To help make the ointment easier to spread, warming a small amount between clean, warm palms for a few seconds prior to application can soften the petrolatum-based formula. This simple step allows the protective barrier to glide onto the skin much more smoothly and absorb comfortably.

    Zero Stars

The "New and Improved" version is awful! It is so sticky and gross. I feel like it turns me into a Human Lint Roller! It you leave it uncovered, everything sticks to it. So what are my options? Long sleeves and long pants to bed in the summer. The clothing is stuck to you. It leaves a sticky residue. All around gross! ZERO STARS - Don't recommend. Why you changed a good thing, I will never understand.

    Skin Healer

The texture is thick and occlusive, but it doesn't feel as heavy or greasy as traditional petroleum jelly. I use it on dry patches, lips, cuticles, and as the last step of my nighttime skincare routine. It makes my skin feel much softer, less irritated, and more hydrated. It does an excellent job locking in moisture, especially during colder weather or when my skin is extra dry. I also appreciate that it's fragrance-free and gentle enough for sensitive skin. The formula contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which help support the skin barrier while providing long-lasting hydration.

Terrible. Nothing like the old formula.

So sad. The only thing that worked for my baby with eczema, and now I’m stuck. The new product is not working. Please bring back the old formula or rebrand/retitle it. You have so many people here that would buy it in truckloads.
