Q: is this product an actaul living creature?

submitted by ericareed47 - 3 months ago
  • A: Yes. They are triops – "living fossils" that have been around for more than 200 million years. They are among the oldest living animal genera known.

Really easy to set up but I am a little disappointed. I bought this for my son so he would be entertained and so he could learn how to take care of his own setup. I used the correct water and kept it at the recommended temperature but the eggs never hatched. I give it 3 stars because it’s easy to set up but the triops never hatched.

Making Learning Fun

The triops are so much better than Sea Monkeys! The kids can follow the directions and do this with supervision. There are so many lessons here; Starting with eggs, watching them turn into life, keeping the life alive and watching it grow. The triops also keep you entertained with flips (try a flashlight), digging in the sand, fighting, and much more!

Use SPRING water and light!

Lopooleart - 23 days ago
We used arrowhead bottled spring water and we used a shallow plastic Tupperware to put the eggs in instead of the container that came with the package. I decided to do that after researching the best way to hatch triops. Putting the container under a lamp helps tremendously and using the shallow dish keeps the water a more consistent temperature. I spotted the first little white speck about 20 hours after adding the eggs to the water. We didn't put sand in as we were planning to move them to a different container later, possibly the one the kit came with. It's hard to get a good picture but currently there is one larger one and some smaller ones which look slightly different. I see a little yellowish guy swimming around in there too! One looks like a triop while the others remind me more of "sea monkeys." This kit is really fun because you get to watch how much they grow each day and watching them swim around is interesting. I think other kits have better instructions and maybe higher chances of success because they give more tips and better containers to keep them in. I would research keeping triops before starting this kit to help understand how they live in the wild. I think the most important part is using proper water (arrowhead worked for us) and keeping a lamp on the container for most of the day.

We had a lot of fun learning about the circle of life with the triops growing, and feedings.

There are so many things to learn from Smithsonian Prehistorian Sea Monster Kit. First lesson is following easy to understand directions. Next lesson learning about the beginnings of life as you wait for the eggs to hatch. You are in for a treat as they swim around look for food and it's your job to provide, with included food pellets. This kit is a jumping off point for learning and is fun and exciting for my autistic son. It helped with learning patience as the triops grew, and learning to count down the days til they hatched and the feeding schedule. I highly recommend this kit for people that want to help their children learn responsibilities for living creatures.

My daughter loves science. And pets. So a science experiment that allows her to hatch her own pets? Yes, please! The tank is so fun... we love dinosaurs around here, so that's definitely a bonus! For a kid who loves science, this is definitely a good, lower cost project that they can enjoy. I was a bit dissapointed that there is no lid included because you know, kids... but we just made sure to put it in a safer spot anyway. The instructions are easy enough to follow, and we cannot wait to see what happens with it. **Complimentary product received for consideration. All thoughts are my own.

I loved having these as a kid! They were so fun to hatch and watch them swim around and grow. Now your kids can do the same. They even come with their own aquarium. Says ages 7+ but I think older kids would enjoy them and younger kids could with adult help.

#ad It is similar to the old sea monkey kits, but these triops are bigger than those tiny 'monkeys." I like that it has everything included and that the instructions are easy to follow. Smaller kids will need adult supervision to get it all set up, but teens will be able to do it on their own. The little aquarium looks great as we wait for our eggs to hatch.

I recieved this product for my honest review. This kit is pretty basic. It was fun learning with the enclosed poster and my daughter was super excited about experiementing with feeding them different types of foods but they never hatched despite keeping the water warm. I was surprised and disappointed that this didn't come with a lid. Too easy to knock over and spill. Still an affordable price for a fun experiement — maybe others will have better luck with hatching.

sea monster kit waste - 1 month ago
my little boy walked through target only to pick out this for his birthday. we used everything exactly as instructions stated I mean heat lamp and checked the temperature. first batch was a fail we used the rest of the "eggs" second batch was a fail. maybe need to lower the price if there is a greater chance of failing than hatching he was so excited just to end up disappointed.

We're so sorry you had a disappointing experience with your Sea Monsters. The Sea Monsters are dormant, so the eggs do not “go bad." Usually, it is an issue with the water or not keeping the tank in a warm enough area. Please reach out to our customer service team at custserv@nsi-int.com, and they will be happy to make things right, send you new eggs, and troubleshoot what went wrong, so you can try again. Please put "Target Review Follow Up" in the subject line, and let them know you posted this review under sea monster kit waste.

During COVID homeschooling, we got really into fish here, as fish are known to lower stress levels and help kids focus. I had wanted to hatch some Triops like I did when I was young, and was so excited to find this kit. The kids were able to do everything themselves (they have become really proficient at aquatic animals in the past two years) and now we chart progress each day so we can learn about life cycles of these Prehistoric "Sea Monsters"

I received this in exchange for my honest review. My 13 year old was excited about this one! She did everything herself with no issues. Now we wait for them to hatch! There's not really anything to play with, but it's great for teaching how things hatch and grow. Now to wait for the hatching to begin!

Just put the eggs in the included aquarium, add water and wait for them to hatch. It takes some patience, but the excitement brought about by the tiny swimming creatures is well worth the wait!
