Q: I'm looking at an 8" twin mattress for the top bunk; I'm confused about the recommendations. Is 8" level with the top railing, or does it sit slightly below the railing so my child doesn't fall off?

A: Hello there, We recommend a mattress thickness of 5 inches up to a maximum of 8, because these mattress heights will allow the guardrail to sit a a level above the mattress. So to answer your question, Yes, this will sit slightly below the railing to prevent a child from falling off this bunk.
