Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.

From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine all together, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light skin individuals, leaving behind a visible white residue on our darker skin sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.

In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white-cast.

Today, BGS is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you. The goal of BGS is to start the conversation globally around sun safety to educate and protect melanin beauties worldwide. Purpose

Directions

Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. Hold container 4 to 6 inches from skin to apply. Do not spray directly into face. Spray on hands then apply to face. Do not apply in windy conditions. Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhalation. Reapply: After 80 minutes of swimming or sweating. Immediately after towel drying. at least every 2 hours. Sun Protection Measures. Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. To decrease this risk, regularly use a sunscreen with a Broad Spectrum SPF of 15 or higher and other sun protection measures including: limit time in the sun, especially from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Wear long sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses.

Pills and strong smell

I used this on myself because I figured sunscreen is sunscreen no matter who's it for and it's cheaper than the regular version. I like the appeal of ease of application. Keep in mind it's recommended to rub after you spray to make sure it covers your skin sufficiently. But when I do that it pills. Even after there's a time gap between lotion application and this. Also it has a very strong alcohol scent. It can also leave some greasy residue on surfaces but it does help to make your skin moisturized and give a little glow. Don't think I'll be repurchasing.

Best sunblock spray

I typically use the lotion version but as the summer approached I decided to use the spray. Best decision. It's light and still gives the shine that the lotion does. My go to on the hot days.

I really like this sunscreen.

We recently went on a beach vacay and I use it on both my kids, my husband and I. And it protected all of us well. Also the spray makes it so easy to apply quickly.

I did a lot of research when choosing this brand and my child doesn’t have sensitive skin but after the second day of applying this, her face broke out so bad. The rest of her body seems fine but her face is a different story. I will never use this again.
