About the Book

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this bestselling work distills 3,000 years of the history of power into 48 well-explicated laws. As attention-grabbing in its design as it is in content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers.

Book Synopsis

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control - from the author of The Laws of Human Nature.

In the book that People magazine proclaimed "beguiling" and "fascinating," Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum.

Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), others teach the value of confidence ("Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness"), and many recommend absolute self-preservation ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

From the Back Cover

THE BESTSELLING BOOK FOR THOSE WHO WANT POWER, WATCH POWER, OR WANT TO ARM THEMSELVES AGAINST POWER . . .

A moral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills three thousand years of the history of power into forty-eight well-explicated laws. As attention-grabbing in its design as it is in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws require prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), some stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"), and some the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally") but like it or not, all have applications in real-life situations. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded -- or been victimized by -- power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

Review Quotes

"Beguiling . . . literate . . . fascinating. A wry primer for people who desperately want to be on top."--People magazine

"An heir to Machiavelli's Prince . . . gentler souls will find this book frightening, those whose moral compass is oriented solely to power will have a perfect vade mecum." --Publishers Weekly

"Satisfyingly dense and . . . literary, with fantastic examples of genius power-game players. It's The Rules meets In Pursuit of Wow! with a degree in comparative literature."--Allure

Nope.

First of all, why is this even being sold at Target? This is a gross manipulation of power and control and basically a roadmap to becoming a narcissistic sociopath. If you believe this is a guide to becoming a successful leader, I hope to God you’re never in a position of power. The only way this book can be used for good is how to point out all the traits of a giant walking red flag.

Bad book, red flags

Not a quality text. The only potential benefit is that a reader may have better clarity in seeing the human red flags attempting to manipulate them using the principles espoused in the pages of this poorly written book.

Not what I was expecting

This book came highly recommended so I made the purchase expecting good things. Once I got home I read the summary on the back cover and it just sounds like it teaches manipulation in gaining power, and that’s not what I’m looking for. I did not read the book because reading the summary was enough to know the book didn’t align with my personal values, and I will be returning the book.

Book in poor condition

Disappointed. Book is ruined (folded back cover) But I am grateful package was delivered on time and not lost. Review is based on book condition not the content.

Dark psychology

This book is basically about dark psychology. All the 5 star reviews would worry me except that people who didn’t already recognize and understand most of these tricks probably don’t have the intelligence to artfully employ them.

For men

You can tell this book was written by men for men. Extremely manipulative and toxic in my opinion. I tried to push through the book and give it the benefit of the doubt but I can’t lie it’s horrible.

Not as you might think

To me, this book explains human nature and how to perfect our natural tendencies to manipulate others. Of course these type of tendancies are control and power. BUT, it is also very enlightening for those want to recognize these tendancies in others, especially in the work place. Also a good read for history buffs. No matter your angle you will get insight from this book. It's loooong and sometimes are to stay focused but really amazing in many ways.
