Guests have expressed significant frustration with the design of this candle, particularly regarding the battery compartment. Many found the screw to be defective and impossible to remove, rendering the candles unusable. However, some guests appreciated the realistic appearance and timer feature, which adds convenience. Overall, while the aesthetic and functionality appeal to some, the challenges with the battery access overshadow the positives, leading to a mixed reception.

The packaging was so difficult to remove, the candle was damaged. It had arrived with a dent in the top, but not usable by the time packaging was removed. Was not indicated as final sale, but when I checked the app to report damage and request refund. It was indicated as ineligible. Not happy.

Screw strips too easily, impossible to change battery
I'm a fool and ignored all the reviews complaining about the screw. I tried multiple screwdrivers (small and large) but none of them were able to get the screw off the battery compartment. The screw immediately started stripping, rendering this candle useless after the battery dies. One reviewer said she just ripped the battery compartment open to continue using it. Unless you're willing to do that, skip this item. (For reference, I purchased in Oct 2025.) Don't be like me. Listen to the reviews.

Thanks for reaching out. We are sincerely sorry for the frustration you are having with removing the battery from the safety system on the candle. The screw is to make the product safer for those who might be at risk (i.e. children) to access and remove the battery. We understand that this may have presented a difficult situation when the screw is damaged when trying to remove, and we apologize for any inconvenience. The easiest way to remove the screw is with a number 0 or 1 Phillips screwdriver with a tip width of 2.5 mm to 3 mm. You want to make sure that the screwdriver has good edges and has not been stripped or worn down. Once you have opened the port and removed the button cell battery the product is safe for general household use, and the screw can be discarded as it isn't necessary for the device to function. If you are still having a difficult time removing the screw, there is a chance that the threaded hole for the screw was damaged on assembly or that there is debris in the threads. To remove it, you can try over-tightening the screw by turning it clockwise, and you should be able to feel it getting easier to turn. Then, place one finger on the latch over the door to the battery port, press in to disengage the lock and gently pry up on the door while turning the screw counterclockwise. Once the door is removed, remove the battery and dispose in accordance with local regulations. Place the battery port door on a surface that will not be damaged by the screw point. Put gentle downward force on the door and turn the screw head with the screwdriver counterclockwise, and the screw should start to back out of the threaded hole.

DO NOT BUY!
THIS IS A DEFECTIVE ITEM, TARGET! You should remove all of them from your shelves. The screw holding the battery compartment closed cannot be unscrewed. The metal is soft and strips the screw. What an absolutely stupid design.

Poor Packaging Design
There is a screw that is incredibly difficult to remove to allow for full use of this candle. It strips very easily and the entire thing broke when I tried to remove the screw.

Defective and impossible to use (do not buy)
I love the light that the threshold flameless candles emit. But this candle is defective. The screw at the bottom of the candle is impossible to remove without damaging the product. I wish I had known this before I bought many of these flameless candles because now I can't return them.

Crap
You cannot unscrew the back. The metal for the screw is soft I could not unscrew it to put in the battery. And this item is not able to be returned. So now I have two frameless candles that don’t work… $36-ish wasters

No good
Can’t unscrew to open the battery lid. Screw thread is really bad. I bought two of them and both same problem.

Broken
I ordered 3 of these and they all arrived broken. Target says that they are not a "returnable" item so I'm out $41. I won't order from Target again.

No no no
These candles are a nightmare. They are cute but not worth the difficulty of getting through the packaging to open them, cuts to your finger from the plastic or the evil tiny screw that will drive you crazy trying to open the battery compartment. The screw will strip no matter how gentle you are. Save yourself a headache.

Unusable
It would be fine if it didn’t have the tiniest screw that is impossible to get out in order to put the battery in for it to work. I don’t know why this unnecessary feature was added.

Hi LMC23. Thanks for the feedback. A law went into effect that forced us to quickly pivot on the design of the candle to secure the button cell battery in the try me candle from being accessed by those at risk (i.e. children). We're sorry for the frustration this might have caused. Please reach out for detailed instructions on removing the screw so you can enjoy the product to the full potential.

Why screw these shut??!!
Why is Target still making/selling these? I bought them twice, thinking it was me before I read the reviews. These are great candles, but you can’t use them. The only reason I know they are pretty when in use is because one I was able to get a partially unscrewed horrible screw out with a pair of pliers. The other was defective and had no screw in the package luckily, so I could open it and actually out batteries inside. The remote and timer is great also. The rest of them are impossible to open and one broke into many pieces while trying to open it, which was even worse than not being able to open the battery compartment straight out of the box. Please stop screwing the battery compartment closed, or change the screw to one that actually fits the opening and can be unscrewed with a normal mini screwdriver but a normal human. If you do, I’ll buy more. Thanks for listening, Target!

Defective
I wish I read the reviews before I bought this in the store. The tiny screw that holds the battery cover is defective. The tiny screwdriver I used obliterated the head and I still can’t open it. DO NOT BUY!!
