A: It's only called "lead" it's really graphite.

These up & up pencils are perfect! They write smoothly, the lead is dark, and the wooden bodies are durable and high quality! I used to use Ticonderoga pencils but I think that these pencils are just as good (maybe even better). You can not beat the price of these pencils! They did not sacrifice quality for quantity at all!
