A: No... I have this bookcase and although the material that covers the back is lightweight, it is necessary for stability. It is attached all the way around and through the structure.. I did cut holes for cords etc which was fine. You could possibly cut one or two sections.

Q: What is the back piece made of? In a previous answer you stated that it provides significant structural support, yet it folds down the center. If you can fold it, then it can't be wood.

A: The backing is make of a slightly stronger material than cardboard its thick and stands up well but honestly I just took mine off.

A: I don't have this particular shelf yet (just considering it), but from experience with similar types of shelves, the backing is used to provide lateral stability by preventing the vertical sides from shifting side-to-side at an angle. Without the backing, there isn't anything from preventing it from wiggling side to side, eventually loosening the screws or pegs holding them in place. The backing provides tension to prevent that and it doesn't need to be fully rigid in compression to do that.

A: I wouldn't say it's particleboard. It's a stronger, thicker, more sturdy cardboard. It's cut in two pieces held together by a thick tape, which is what allows it to fold. It doesn't wobble or sway.

Great bookcase!
This bookcase is great! With that said, it took me about 3hrs to put it together myself. It would have "only" taken 2.5, but I realized as I was putting the top on that I had put one of the pieces on backwards. Thank goodness I hadn't secured the top yet. The instructions are decent, but there were times that they weren't exactly clear enough. Note also..the box was incredibly heavy when FedEx dropped it off. My driver is great and asked if I needed help when he saw me struggling to get it inside the house. It is great though, I'm very pleased with it!

Doesn't hold books as expected
I expect a piece of furniture that claims to be a bookshelf to be designed to hold books. However, the 2nd and 3rd shelves in the middle are fixed shelves, and are too short to hold even the shortest of books. The top trim piece may also have arrived broken.

Error with pre drilled holes
Nice looking bookshelf. Exactly what we were looking for and couldn’t find anything similar within this budget. Something significant to note: piece known as “P” was missing 5 holes that my husband had to drill in order to make this work. Appears that the manufacturer failed to pre drill these 5 holes. Besides that the assembly was straight forward, could have been a little more detail oriented but it got the job done. Hardware is packaged individually to each step which was helpful. This is the “espresso” color which appears much darker than the online photos but we prefer it like this anyways.

Unfortunately, arrived damaged. I'm out 50 bucks I paid someone to assemble it.
The bookcase arrived damaged. I paid someone to assemble it as it was for a project and the damage I discovered after it was assembled. TARGET initially wanted me to return it which was going to be problematic, obviously. I had to call them and graciously they refunded me because I could not wait for a new one to come. Pictures are just some of the highlights. I’m not sure it was damaged in shipping. It may have been damaged prior to that. I question their quality control. It had arrived in good condition. It may have been the perfect solution for the project.

Picture of the espresso color shelf is wrong!
The shelf color espresso is wrong. The picture in the Target app is a reddish/brown. The shelf in the box is black. I bought the reddish brown color a few years ago and love it. (Also have 2 white ones) Target needs to change the picture of it, because returning this heavy bulky item isn’t easy.

Pretty piece.
It really is a great piece. However after putting it together noticed there was a crack in the bottom shelf. Too much of a pain to disassemble to take it back. I hope it holds up.
