Q: What is the process used to decaffinate the beans?
A: Thanks for your question Bob! We offer coffees that are both decaffeinated by a direct process and decaffeinated by a water process. The water process method is used for our organic coffees. The direct process decaffeination is used for all other coffees, including the Green Mountain Breakfast Blend Decaf. The direct process uses a variety of FDA approved solvents, other than just water. These solvents are normally methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. The caffeine is bonded to the solvents and extracted from the coffee after it has been steam heated. The caffeine and solvent are then washed away and the coffee is re-dried. We hope this helps!
