In 2026, the rules for the iPhone 17 Pro Max are very consistent, but there is one major "trap" to avoid. 1. If you buy from the Apple Store (apple.com) Yes, it is unlocked. Whether you pay in full or use Apple Card Monthly Installments, the phone comes unlocked from Day 1. The T-Mobile/Verizon/Boost Exception: Even if you choose one of these carriers during checkout at Apple to get a special deal, the phone still arrives unlocked. The AT&T Exception: This is the only "trap." If you buy from Apple but choose AT&T Installment Plans (financing through your AT&T bill), the phone will be locked to AT&T until the device is paid off in full. 2. If you buy from a Carrier (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) No, it is usually locked. AT&T & T-Mobile: The phone is locked until you pay it off completely. For T-Mobile, this can sometimes take up to 365 days of active service. Verizon: They have a unique "60-day rule." Even if you are still paying for the phone, Verizon automatically unlocks it 60 days after activation, provided your account is in good standing. 3. If you buy from a Retailer (Best Buy, Target, Walmart) It depends on the "Flex Policy." Most iPhones sold at big-box retailers are "Reseller Flex" units. This means they are unlocked in the box, but they lock to the first SIM card (eSIM) you activate. Screen freezes a lot!

It is only day two of owning this phone and my husband and I are already encountering difficulties. Although there are several features that are nicer: like the 8x zoom on the camera and the camera itself seems to be better with focus and clarity, and i like that they offer 2 TB for storage, etc. It is seriously lacking elsewhere. After all these years, apple still hasn't fixed being able to see the screen well in the sun. And when you save a photo to an album, you should be able to delete it off your camera roll, to save space, but that is still not part of this phones upgrade. The most annoying thing we have encountered thus far, is the screen freezing up randomly. And whatever you're in/on you have to exit out and go back to unfreeze it. This happened several year ago, when they offered free phones for yours and the phones were junk. The I-Phone 17 Pro seems to be following that same path.

Piece of crap

Phone does not have WiFi calling. If you have to go to airplane mode and then to cellular to turn it on and this piece of crap still won’t go into WiFi calling and with multiple towers down for weeks I’d say Att sucks
