Q: I used color oops Mon,& it did not take all the processed color out. It left it an odd orange reddish color. Im trying to go from red to my natural blonde color. How soon can I use color oops again?

submitted by Karen - 9 years ago
  • A: Color Oops can be used twice in a day but we suggest to wait an additional day. When coloring hair, a mixture of artificial hair color and hydrogen peroxide (oxide/developer) are used to deposit color into the hair. At the same time it is depositing color, the hydrogen peroxide (oxide/developer) can lighten the natural pigment your hair. Therefore, even though you may be coloring darker, your natural pigment may be altered. When color Oops is applied and the artificial color is removed, what is left of your natural color will be exposed. If your natural color was altered, you will see a brassy, red or warm color. In this case, you can re-color to your desired color.

  • A: Hi there!!! So this particular product is for lifting color not removing it. For example: my hair is blue right now, if I use this- it will bring my deep blue to a light blue because that is the base of my hair color right now. Just like the red goes orange- because it's the base color for your red hair. As far as when to use it again, I use it same day if needed.

Q: Will Oops work on built up semi-permanent color? It's not washing out, as advertised.

submitted by LG - 2 months ago
  • A: No, traditional Color Oops (the kind in the red or yellow box) is not designed for and will not work on built-up, direct-dye semi-permanent colors like most bold fashion colors, which sit on the hair's surface. You may have better luck with Color Oops Bold Remover, a separate, specialized product from the same brand designed to remove direct dyes, but you must first test it on a strand of your hair to confirm it will work on your specific dye.

Q: I have dyed medium brown hair. Can I use color oops to only remove small strips of color on my hair to create highlights since my natural color is a light brown? And after that since it will most likely be brassy can I the use a purple shampoo to tone it?

submitted by Pvc - 3 months ago
  • A: You can use Color Oops to remove some dyed brown color, but it's not recommended for creating highlights or for precise, localized color removal, as it aims to remove all artificial dye in a large area and can result in unpredictable, brassy, or uneven tones rather than just highlights. You can use a purple shampoo to tone down the brassiness afterward, but it's advisable to consult a professional stylist for a controlled highlight application to achieve your desired look safely.

Q: I dyed my hair copper at a salon. Then touch up my hair and my hair ended up looking auburn red. Will this product remove the auburn to help me return to copper hair?

submitted by Cristal - 4 months ago
  • A: Yes, Color Oops can help remove the auburn color and potentially allow you to return to a copper shade. Color Oops is designed to remove permanent oxidative hair color, which is what you likely used when you initially dyed your hair copper and when you touched it up. It works by shrinking the dye molecules, allowing you to wash them away.

Q: I just used it, rinsed and shampooed for the recommended amount, and my hair and bathroom smell AWFUL. How do I resolve?

submitted by Ashley - 6 months ago
  • A: Some organic low molecular weight sulphur-containing chemicals known as Mercaptans have a strong cabbage or bad egg smell. Any Mercaptans that are trapped in the hair fibre (keratin) after rinsing will release this unpleasant smell. Very dry or porous hair is likely to hold on to these chemicals longer so will require several if not more shampoos. In order to remove a persistent odor that has remained in the hair simply wash the hair with the following mixture. Mix 10% of a water soluble bicarbonate/carbonate salt with 90% water and leave on the hair for 5 to 10 minutes. Then without rinsing apply an acid-based solution to acidify the hair, such as 5% white vinegar (acetic acid) or 5% lemon juice (citric acid) mixed with 95% water. Leave this solution on the hair for a further 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse off. This procedure will produce a carbon dioxide gas which will remove the chemicals that cause the odor. Then finish with a pleasant shampoo and condition as usual.

    Smelly, But Super Effective

My hair was complicated. Top part was bleached and had orange semi permanent color. The bottom has been subjected to hilift red in the past and then had orange on top after it faded. Color oops got all the colors sitting on top out so I could see what the canvas I was working wjth actually looked like. it smells terrible and takes time, but it really gets the job done.

Do what the directions tell you stop complaining!!

ok, for those of you saying it doesn't work here is the problem: you didn't do as directed. after the allotted time, you need to rinse with warm water about 10 minutes, then shampoo, then rinse again for 5 minutes, shampoo and rinse 2 X's more, for a total time of 20 minutes.. THEN: you need to use a good hair mask because this is drying to your hair, you ARE stripping color.. if you do it correctly, no short cuts you will have the correct results. Stop trying to take quick easy short steps just to get done. Oh heads up, if you don't follow these steps, the old color reappears because you didn't rinse the molecules that were grabbed completely out and they reattached to your hair.. that's why some of you are seeing that your hair looks like it hasn't changed.. you haven't rinsed it out properly. do exactly what it says and you'll have success. I've used this over multiple times and never had an issue... it's time consuming but if you want positive results just suck it up, stop complaining and do it right!! it's a fantastic product that just happens to stink!! Hey beauty is painful lol

    Works great

I was blonde and wanted to go darker, and of course instead of going to the salon to see my usual stylist I decided to “save money” and go to Sally’s lol filled my hair with a bright copper red then dyed a dark brown over that twice (wella brand demi permanent) left it for a month and my hair grows so fast my roots were looking like I was going bald. Finally grabbed some color oops I was so nervous cause it could have turned out a nice ginger or a disaster. I’m very pleased with the color tbh. It’s very stinky obviously but make sure you wash it like six times and rinse for half hour. Make sure you get a good conditioner

    Smells awful

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got the product to help remove excess color from my hair. It worked a little bit but didn’t do much. I used it again and for some reason it started smelling weird. I’ve washed my hair over 20 times the past two weeks and it still hasn’t came out it smells awful like rotten eggs Would not recommend.

This is some kind of magical witchcraft! I’m soooooo thankful. My hair turned a dark maroon instead of a softer red and I have an event tomorrow. My hair is now a beautiful, natural, blonde. The process is long, but if you follow the instructions, IT WORKS. Hallelujah

    Works great!

I recently went to a new hairdresser to have my hair dyed. My roots were showing so I wanted to get them done and have some high/low lights added at the same time. I'm a natural born redhead, but with age my color has muddied to a less than attractive auburn with grey highlights! She let me know that she only had time to do my roots, so rather than choose a color that more closely matched the rest of my hair, she went with a bold red and I ended up looking like a red skunk! The strip of my roots and all around my hairline were an in-your-face red and the rest was the sun-bleached strawberry blonde from a recent holiday. It looked like I did it myself. When I got home I started researching how long it would be before I could color again without ruining my hair, and came across a Reddit forum talking about this product. I went to my local pharmacy and bought the extra-strength Color Opps and used it that night. I carefully read the instructions (clearly some did not) and also purchased a protein hair mask for use afterwards and I have to say that it worked perfectly! Yes, the smell is a little offensive, but not any worse than the smell of ammonia in hair dyes. My hair went from the red skunk stripe to a lovely, all over strawberry blonde and it feels great. No re-dying necessary. Thank you, thank you!! Make sure to read the directions! Rinse, rinse, rinse and use a protein mask afterwards, and you shouldn't have any issues.

Worked well but the smell! :/

Did a great job! I had black box dye, years of applying it over and over. After using it, it took my hair back to when I dyed it a dark red that I had done 4 years ago! I would give it a 5 star if it didn’t smell so bad. In the beginning of the process I was okay and was able to manage the smell. Didn’t think it was too bad, but my hair still smelled like the product after the shower. Going to try a detox shampoo to see if it removes the smell. If you can bare it, then I think this product would work well for you!

    Consider a different product

I only gave it 2 stars because I used it once in the past and it worked really well. I used it today to remove some semi-permanent dye from highlights I did, and it barely made a dent. I followed the directions and even used a clarifying shampoo to lather rinse and repeat. Barely anything came out. This product was very disappointing. Would I ever consider it again? Truth be told, the odds are not good. If it can't even remove semi-permanent dye, then what's the point? Hopefully the new color I put in will cover what was left over which was a grayish blue color. Guess we'll see.

Thank you for your feedback, and we're sorry to hear that Color Oops Extra Strength didn't effectively remove your semi-permanent dye. We understand your frustration, especially after following all the instructions, and truly appreciate your input. The reason you likely experienced minimal results is that Color Oops Extra Strength is specifically formulated to remove permanent, oxidative hair color (color that is mixed with a developer) by shrinking those specific dye molecules so they can be washed away. It is not designed for and will not work on direct-application, semi-permanent colors which simply stain the hair shaft. This information is typically noted on our packaging and instructions. For removing those types of stubborn semi-permanent or direct dyes, we highly recommend our specialized product: Color Oops Bold Color Remover. The Bold Remover is a different formula (it uses a gentle bleach-lightening powder) designed specifically to tackle and fade vibrant, direct dyes effectively, while minimizing damage. If you'd like to give the correct product a try, or if you have any further questions, please reach out to our customer service team at info@developlus.com. We would love to help you achieve the results you are looking for. The Color Oops Team

    It Works!

This product is the real deal. I decided to attempt to go ginger for the fall/winter & the color just didn't sit well with my skin tone. The following morning, I picked up a box of this stuff & followed the instructions thoroughly. The key really is in the rinse process. Allowing your hair to rinse for 20 minutes & shampooing (no conditioner) your hair 5x over. My hair was left with no visible damage, the color pigment was broken up and rinsed right out. I did color my hair directly after (about a 5 hour break) & it looks amazing & right back to where I stared. No damage, I dryness. I followed up with a hair masque. 10/10 would recommend this product. Side note: the smell is very intense, but I think it's worth putting up with for the results.

    Give it a try!

My hairdresser thought a dark ganache brunette would look great on me from my years of balayage. $200 later I looked like Wednesday Addams. I tried to live with the change but decided to try this product because I couldn't stand the dark hair on my extremely pale skin. It turned out great! My hair is this beautiful shade of brown and has the old dimension it use to have. Everything is very even and in no way looks like I experimented at home. The smell was pretty bad. I did place a head towel over the plastic wrap that was included to keep heat in better.

    Smells like corpse

When they say this smells it smells it has the same fragrance scientifically As a rotting corpse it will take 3 weeks of using vinegar, baking soda, dawn dish soap and clarifying shampoo to even get the smell toned down and the second u think it’s gone if u swear or it gets wet that smell is back and it’s not in your head everyone smells it pls tell me if u know a better way and it doesn’t even remove color
1 reply from Developlus Customer Service team - 1 month ago
The notoriously bad odor from Color Oops is caused by sodium hydrosulfite, the active ingredient that shrinks artificial hair dye molecules. Many users report that insufficient rinsing is the main reason the smell lingers, because small dye molecules are left behind. The smell can often be reactivated by sweat or water for weeks or months afterward. While the DIY methods you have tried work for some, others find the smell remains. To finally eliminate the odor, you must get the lingering dye molecules and chemicals out of your hair's porous shaft. Use a clarifying shampoo or, if necessary, Dawn dish soap as a last resort. Dawn is highly effective but can be very drying. Rinse with the hottest water you can tolerate to help open the hair cuticle and release trapped particles. Rinse for an extended time. After the intense washing and rinsing, use a powerful odor-absorbing hair mask to neutralize and absorb the odor.
