I would rate it lower if I could. Once my 8 yr old figured out the “Beyblade” aspect, the actual marker part was a fail. It didn’t always spin well. It often fell over or flew off the paper onto the floor/across the table. It is more likely to create tears than a masterpiece. Save your money. I can’t believe Crayola put their name on this. I held them to a higher standard.

Thank you for sharing your candid review. Learning a new technique can take some practice and we have some tips to make the learning curve less frustrating. The harder and faster you pull the ripcord, the longer it will spin. Aim the marker tip close to the paper and keep the Colourwhirl parallel to the surface before launching it for a more controlled and steady spin. You can check out a visual at https://www.crayola.com/feature/colourwhirls. To keep your Colourwhirls art contained, try placing your drawing surface inside a cardboard box before letting it rip! The box will provide borders for the paper to help keep the toy and its colorful swirls on the paper. We hope these suggestions make your experience more enjoyable. Splurge
This toy was great, my 8 and 12 year old had a blast. They made a masterpiece. It kept them busy for hours. The instruction manual was a big confusing at first, but after a couple minutes we figured it out. Make sure you buy extra large paper as sometimes the marker flies of the handle. You can use different sized markers, like the ultra fine and thick markers which was a big surprise. For the ultra fine markers you can use the back piece of the spinner handle. This is definitely a good buy for the price. The only downside is if you spin it a bit wrong it flies far and can cause a mess but besides that definitely recommend!

Thank you for sharing your review regarding Crayola Colourwhirls, Jennifer. It is awesome to hear that your kids such a blast and made a masterpiece that kept them happily spinning and creating for hours. We appreciate you mentioning that learning a new technique can take some practice and your helpful suggestion about using extra-large paper. You are absolutely right that enthusiastic spinning can sometimes send the marker flying. For families looking to keep their colorful creations more contained, a great trick is to place the drawing surface inside a cardboard box before letting it rip. The box provides natural borders to help keep the paper, the toy, and all those vibrant swirls right where they belong. We hope Colourwhirls continue to add creativity and fun to your family time. – Chris, Colorful Care Team

Messy
Spinning area is much larger than a sheet of paper and writes all over the area and not just on paper as shown. Would work much better for large posters/cardboard.

Save your money.
These were frustrating for my 4 and 10 year old to use (I could barely get it to work myself). The kids gave up after about 15 minutes of frustration and now the pieces float around our art space. I’ll likely just throw them away. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Junk
This thing is a joke. Hard to get the marker in, hard to spin, does not make a cool pattern. I literally threw it in the trash 10 minutes after opening.

Disliked this item.
I bought this item for my kids and it was too hard for them to use. It made a huge mess and did not work as intended. It was pointless. I don't recommend it.

Messy!
Fun idea, but poor execution. Hard to get the handle of using the tool and can’t control the movement. Marker gets everywhere.

My 6 and 8 year old loved this.
I have to admit it's messy but it was a lot of fun. We made a masterpiece. I would recommend to the ones who buys this to have a large open area and a large piece of paper or poster board, I would also recommend the washable markers lol we made a mistake and bought the non washable, it took a day or so of washing hands and baths for it to disappear. I think it was worth the mess though. It is hard for little hands to work the contraption. It's a little tricky to change the marker's but once you figure it out it's easy. I love that you can use different sizes of marker's.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Crayola Colourwhirls. We are thrilled to hear that this fun toy has been a welcome addition to your creative collection. You made some excellent points about avoiding mess, and we have another tip to share! Place your paper inside a box to contain the spinner within the box's area. This way, the art stays on the paper and does not end up on household surfaces. We hope this product continues to help your family create happy and colorful memories. - Chris, Colorful Care Team

Junk
Super disappointing. Put this in my sons Easter basket and it’s junk. It is hard to set up, it doesn’t make a cool pattern, and if you do it wrong the thing goes flying across the table and in our case the floor getting marker everywhere. Will be returning.

Worst thing ever
Do not buy this ridiculous toy!!! It’s complicated and does not work as simply as it seems. If you are able to put it together you’ll be surprised that the top does not actually spin with the marker as intended - it does not spin w marker it basically falls indefinitely no fun designs on paper in fact a big mess w markers all over adults and kids hands. lol. Terrible. Crayola who’s designing this please stop just make markers k thanks. I would have had more fun burning my $6. What’s up with toys now days they’re just junk that lose the appeal after a minute. Lesson learned better off playing in the woods and pretending make believe.

Great fun for kids parties
My nephews loved this toy. I bought a few of these for my nephews 9th birthday. They were a hit with the kids at the party, and even the adults enjoyed this activity. I could see this being used in some larger game/activity/competition idea for social media accounts. The toy did spin pretty far but we were outside with a big piece of paper on the patio so it was okay for us. I think they sell a case to contain the toys for others.
