Problem after problem

When it works, it’s great, but when it doesn’t….. Latest issue is the “GRADE”. My 1040 can show1% gradient while climbing 7%, or some similar disparity. GARMIN has been working on this for a couple of months with no solution to my knowledge. They did send a new device, but same problem. Maps are sometimes way off. The most common problem is the Varia Radar515 “disconnecting” while riding. Very scary when you’re used to depending on the radar. Another typical issue is the different elevations & distances between different riders on the same exact ride route. Sometimes the elevations are off by more then 500 ft.

I purchased this for navigation as the GPS and maps are incredible. However, the actual navigation was inferior to Wahoo. Couldn’t figure out turn by turn, audio notices, and distance to waypoints prompts. Also, you lose the ability to see speed. If I needed a map this detailed, I would look at my phone. I just need the route and reliable navigation. The GPS is superior but, functionally, the Garmin does not help you navigate a course any better than Wahoo. I returned the Garmin 1040 and purchased the Wahoo element 3 and am happier and safer. I just don’t need all that excess data bogging me down. I just want to ride!

I stepped up from the Garmin Edge 530 and WOW! what an upgrade. I really like the larger screen, the touch screen and visibility of the information on the screen It has so much and you can set it up and configure it to however you ride. It syncs perfectly with the Garmin Radar rear light as well. The battery life is great and to this point, I have no complaints at all.
It was great gear

Need to get more used to the navigation in the screens. But works great for navigation on the bike!

I love it when it works and everything stays connected but sadly that seldom happens. It also is a major pain to do software updates and has a tendency to turn itself off mid ride. All in all a frustrating experience.
Good update from Edge 1030 plus

My 1030 plus decided took on water on a wet ride and had to be replaced. I got the Edge 1040 thinking it would be very similar and did not expect much difference. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvements in the unit. First thing I noticed were the icons on the data screens that make it easier to find things like elevation, grade, gears, and next turn direction (see first two screen shots). Probably the best improvement is in the Climb Pro screen (screen shot 3). Climbs are automatically detected based on the road you are riding (previously climbs just showed up on preloaded routes). The climb pro screen now shows you the map along with the graph. Includes the grade you are currently at and remaining distance, grade and altitude gain left in the climb. Nice feature! I like how the meter pairs with Di2 shifters as seen on the last screen shot.
Easy to use.

I've had my Garmin Egde 1040 for awhile now. I love the touch features. It has great battery life, it connects easily to all my sensors and uploads quickly to Garmin Connect and all my other apps. The screen is also the perfect size for viewing a map.

I upgraded from an older Edge 830, which is still great computer, but needed something easier to read when out riding with my daughter. We just moved to Tennessee and am completely unfamiliar with the trail system here and rely on the maps to keep us from getting lost. It has way more matrix built in than needed, but felt in the long run of things, would be the right choice. Yes, it was expensive than I wanted to spend, but so far am happy with the choice.

I bought the 1040 a few weeks ago when my 1030 finally gave out after 5.5 years of almost daily use. Sure the 1030 had its share of glitches. It would sometimes seize and stop recording during rides, requiring a reboot each time. I had to leave it on the charger all night, every night, otherwise it would randomly turn itself on and discharge the battery by morning. But when it worked I was happy with it so I decided to stay with Garmin where I’ve been for many years with multiple devices. So far the 1040 has been great. The display and touchscreen are noticeably improved. I’m still discovering some of the functionality changes and how to operate them. However, I primarily use the basics and this 1040 is excelling with that. I’ve always been impressed with Garmin batteries on all my devices. And since this new 1040 stays off at night as it should, I can get at least three or four rides in on one charge. Looks like I’ll be saving on my electricity bill! The on/off button is more responsive and the device powers up quickly. I like that the device shuts itself off shortly after I download a ride to Connect. If I want to go back into the 1040 it’s no big deal because it powers right up. Another noticeable difference from my 1030 is that rides download so much faster to the Connect app. I don’t need a bunch of bells and whistles, although the 1040 has plenty. I simply want my bike computers to work. So far this 1040 is doing just that.
Good improvement over my 820, menu system horrible

My 820 is losing battery capacity so I looked at what was available from Garmin (I am in to the Garmin ecosystem). The 1040 was a good value for me. I am impressed with the additional features over my 820. However, Garmin still fails in the menu system. They needs to get some user input and not let the coders decide how to do things. The way it is set up is illogical. Also, the default home screen is user unfriendly. I could not find a way to modify what I want on the home screen. The simplicity of the 540 home screen is missed.

I love the computer, the functionality, but there is so much you can customize that it is a bit complex. There is definitely a learning curve, however, I do feel it is worth it. I love having my varia radar, routes, climbs, and all the data right at my fingertips.

I am happy that I upgraded from 830 to 1040 (Garmin Edge 1040 that is, not to the IRS 1040). I wanted a bigger & better display than the 830's to read heart rate, cadence, power as large numbers as well as time, time of day (not to miss the kid's school pickup), distance, and speed in small numbers, all on one screen. Looks great on the 1040. In addition, I like the auto-climb feature, even though the climb data seems to lag a bit behind my actual position. However, the look-ahead info is still super helpful. I have also started to use the training screen that guides me to the right heart beat (zone) during the training session (that makes the slow Zone 2 rides a bit more bearable). In summary, I am very happy with the 1040 for the last two weeks (250 miles so far) and highly recommend it.

I was able to download all my ridewithgps routes onto my 1040 for Spain and Portugal and the unit would anounce my up coming turn and distance perfectly. At the end if the day I could see all of stats which were very easy to pull up and my main screen was a cinch to format it with what I wanted to see as I was riding. With its very long battery life I wasn't worried about it dying on me after 6 or more hours in the saddle. or

This 1040—like the 1030—is buggy. At least twice with the 1040, and several times with the 1030 and 1030 Plus, I have gone out to ride to find the 1040 charge at 1% even though it had shown 40-50% charge at the end of my previous ride a couple of days earlier. Very frustrating. There is a bug in the software. Otherwise, the 1040 does a good job.

This is the most important device on my bike. It records my results, keeps me informed about my other Garmin and Shimano components and provides safety by alerting my of vehicles and other cyclist approaching from behind.
