Great UI
Having used bike computers from the big brands and ridden thousands of kms, this is my favorite one yet. The UI is so easy to use. The screen is great and easy to see and it's the perfect size for both racing and training.

Garmin Edge Gets Better and Better
I've had Garmin Edge computers since the 500 and have loved each edition. The 540 is another improvement with the workout screen being my personal favorite. Battery life keeps improving also, which was an issue with older models.

Mixed
Unit operates well. I thought the user instructions were confusing, and this unit has far more capabilities than I will use. For me, the small screen in sunlight became pretty useless, without reading glasses

Solid step up from Edge 530
I upgraded to the 540 and appreciate its additional software features for training. The GPS is improved, as well as the menu navigation and setup. The battery definitely lasts longer and I love the new "main menu". You can set it up with as much or as little data fields and info as you want to see. I do have two complaints. The font on the menus is on the small side compared to the font size of the 530. The other issue is that the backlight is much too dark!! That is a definite problem. 90% on the 540 is still not as bright as 60% on the Edge 530! That is not cool. Overall, it's a good unit for a good price.

We really appreciate your feedback! If you'd like to change the font size on your Edge 540's map, you can do so by following the steps outlined here: http://ms.spr.ly/6423tyzFU As for your concerns about the brightness, we'd like to help with this. When you have the time, please set the backlight of both units to 60%, then take a photo of them side-by-side and upload your picture to this link: http://ms.spr.ly/6424tyzFq Afterward, you can call Garmin Support at 800-800-1020 to discuss this in further detail. At that time, I recommend mentioning that you uploaded a photo to that link so the agent can review it.

Works great!
This is my first bike computer so it took me a bit to figure it out. Still really don't know what all of the options do but so far it works great! Found some good routes with the app and sent them to the unit fairly easily. Kind of wish I went with the touch screen but the buttons work once you figure them out. So far I really like the unit.

Great head unit! Buuttt…
This is a great head unit, it bright, strong signal, has a HUGE list of features, and that’s where it loses a star. There are so many things this device can do, I can’t imagine how the will ever come up with a 550. The issue is, I don’t need that many features. Sure you can turn many of not all of them off but I shouldn’t have to. I prefer for them all to be off and let me add what I want. I don’t want segments for example. Turning them off is a challenge. To clean up the Home Screen I ended up calling support. The navigation is a world apart from my 520Plus and I found it difficult to manage. I’m getting the hang of it but it’s a steep learning curve. Watch videos about this unit, then go get one. If you get one first you’ll be confused. After watching the videos you’ll still want one but you’ll better understand how to manage it.

Garmin? More like Garm-win!
I've tried a few cycling computers from Garmin and I've gotta say this gets the job done and more. The solar aspect ensures that your battery won't quit on you when you aren't ready to quit, yourself. There are so many functions and features that you can tailor the display to what you need and don't need. The app helps a ton in that department. The functions featured in this computer are applicable for pro and amateurs alike. Well worth the investment in a do-it-all headunit.

Great features & wonderful battery life
Picked this up for the Birthday Sale after hearing my friend rave about his 530. It's a massive upgrade from the 130 Plus--the navigation is easy to follow, it has a great heads up display, and it syncs well with my Varia. My only complaint is that all of the menus get a bit convoluted, but there's good help documentation online and I'm sure it's just part of the learning curve. Super excited to keep riding with it!

Great device - learning curve
I'm really happy now with my Garmin Edge 550 Solar. I have a GPSMap 64S and a GPSMap 65S. I assumed the Edge 540 would have similar functionality. When I grasped that it is really a smart watch in a different housing I found what I wanted to use.

Perfect size and ClimbPro works well
I have had 3 weeks of use with the Garmin 540 Solar and it has been very helpful for my rides. Originally, I was planning to purchase a larger Garmin like the 1040 as I was concerned about the size of the map on a small screen. The 540 has turned out to be a good size as it fits neatly on the bar stem, while the clarity of the screen provides good map images. I also broadcast my heart rate to the 540 from my Garmin watch which I use as a HR sensor. It's easy to load up route files to the device. The ClimbPro has been very beneficial for taking the anxiety out of climbs when riding an unfamiliar route. The visual automatically pops on the screen so that I can adjust my effort and gearing for the upcoming grade.

A bit of a learning curve,but I love it.
Switched from Wahoo Bolt to the 540, the features are amazing on the 540. I have Garmin radar and front lights as well as a Garmin Fenix 7, all work perfectly together.

Easy to use - no training required
I was looking for something that would not require me become a "software engineer" or "expert user". This thing actually works when you 1) hit the ON button and 2) the START button. Yes you can do fancy connections with your phone and a bunch of other crap i don't need. But the main reason i like this thing is that you can hit ON and START and then go biking !

Upgraded to Edge 840
I loved the Edge 540 so much that I regretted not getting the 840 instead. I ended up upgrading to the 840 for its touchscreen, enhanced ease of use, and the ability to navigate to specific addresses and intersections on the fly.

It's amazing how much data these provide
It's truly amazing how much data this bike computer can provide you. Not only helpful on the trail, but also very helpful for ride analytics after you get back home. The 540 interface takes a little getting used to how to navigate for some, but it's very similar to the button configuration on Garmin's Instinct series of watches and since I've been using those for years this was pretty intuitive for me to figure out. If it's new to you, take a little time learning how to navigate and it will quickly become second nature. You don't need more than what this computer provides. It's a great value.

LOVE it
After losing my Garmin Edge 530 in a MTB "incident" I purchased the 540 and I absolutely love it. The fact that it pairs automatically with my Garmin Varia as soon as I turn it on is time saving and reassuring. The camera starts running automatically. I also love that the default setting on the device scrolls though various screens when I'm riding. The battery life is something I'm not sure about yet. It does not seem to me that the solar aspect is making that much of a difference - but I'm still getting used to it. So it's NEW in that regard.

Issues
I purchased this item a couple of weeks ago due to the fact my Garmin 130 locked up in a loop (ride in progress, and will not back out), now, with the 540, very nice features....but...I have problems connecting with my Garmin power meter peddles, it wants to use the Trek Domane+ internal power meter, so again, I have to manually make sure before a ride it connects to peddles (the 130 did not do this), now also, it does NOT pick up or connect to the Garmin Vira tail light radar (again, it did with the 130)....I have spent hours trying to connect with no success, but still trying.
