A: It is not about the age, it is about the weight and height of the child, and if the shoulder belt sits correctly against their anatomy. If the child is 12 but only 40lbs and 40inches, they still need to be in a booster. Each state is different on exact laws, so please check with your pediatrician and state laws.

But it's more about the weight limit for when the child would transition from rear to forward to high-back booster mode. Rear facing weight limit is 4-50 lb. 4-26.5lb must be rear-facing and 26.5-50lb should be rear-facing. For forward-facing the weight limit is 26.5-65lb. 26.5-50lb can be forward-facing and 50-65lb should be forward-facing. For the booster mode a child would need to be 43-57 inches tall at least for years old. 40-65lb can be in booster mode and over 65lb the child must be in the booster mode. It has 4 recline positions for rear facing to get the best fit to your vehicle and child.
