A: As one answer said, the 13 gallon tall kitchen bags fit perfect. You MUST use the two notches at the back, then it will fit over the front lip. This keeps it from getting stuck in the hinge of the lid. Orient the bag correctly, use the notches at the back, and a 13 gallon tall kitchen bag fits just perfect.

A: If someone is struggling to use a typical 13 gallon trash bag, there is a good chance that they are not putting it in correctly. There are two notches on the top rim of the trashcan close to hinge. Hitch the liner to one notch. Then fold it over the rim of the can. Lastly hitch the liner to the other notch. It will be held tight and fits perfectly. Also, since the trashcan has the narrow sides on the front and back you will want the seems of the trash bag facing the front and back of the can. The first time I put the liner in, I did not see the notches for a minute. If you tried to fit the bag over the entire rim of the can or turned it 90 degrees orienting the seams toward the sides, it would not fit. The can is well designed and the liner fits snuggly when you use the notches. Great design for a can at this price!

Q: I don't use 13 gallon bags. Can you use larger 30 gallon bags and just fold it over the can's rim then put the lid on the can and manually open the lid. I am disabled and a step pedal is difficult.

A: Hi Maggie - great question! You can use a 30-Gal bag, it will fit but will be a little big. We recommend using clips or a band to help keep it folded down. You can absolutely manually open the lid. Just in case you didn't know, Hefty does have XL 20-Gal capacity trash cans available that would fit a 30-Gal bag better. I hope this helps!

A: Hi vikkih - to unlock, slide the silver latch forward and the bin will open. Here is a link to a video that shows a similar Hefty trash can - at around 29 seconds in, you can see how the lock slides backwards to engage the lock, you will just need to reverse this motion.

Foot release trash can.
Much more cost effective than other trash cans. I had a swing top lid, but my cat had discovered he could get in the trash. He doesn’t like this one, but I do. I do wish the lif could be opened and stay open for longer jobs, but that’s all. It does the job keeping odors in and cats out.

Hefty Slim Step Trash Can w/ Locking Lid Pedal Operated
This Hefty trash can is a complete piece of junk. First, it takes the entire corp of engineers just to attach the lid. Then the foot pedal has the audacity to say no not opening. Not today. Not ever. I'm especially annoyed because I specifically bought it because I wanted the foot pedal to open the lid. That's not some optional bonus feature! That's the entire reason for getting a step can. I don't need a twenty plastic sculpture in my bathroom. I need a trash can that says Step and here lid opens. Not Step here to contemplate your purchasing decisions.And the fact that the instructions literally show someone putting a knee on the thing has me crying.

Love the locking lid. Have dog that loves to 'dumpster dive', takes care of that problem, Nice large size, holds a lot of garbage. Isn't made from the heaviest of plastics, but suffices for the purpose. Priced right, unlike some other locking baskets which cost an arm and a leg. Uses a standard 30 gal plastic garbage bag, although we insert 'Pick n Save' wrapped in plastic bag in basket so garbage doesn't sit around too long before throwing out. Happy with purchase, the basket is large 24"H x 18"L x 11-1/2 W outside dims.

Better than the fancy trashcans
It’s very durable and gets the job done. I bought one 2 years ago and the locking feature is great. My dogs love to trash dig and this keeps them out….when we remember to lock it. It also holds odors very well. For $20 you can’t go wrong !
