Heroquest First Light Board Game

As an owner of the Mythic Tier and numerous expansions, I can honestly say at current price this is a great bargain for anyone who's interested in HeroQuest but not wanting to spend a bundle of cash to find out if it's a game for them. Differences in the two "Game System" boxes are mainly the plastic miniatures in the more expensive version vs cardboard represetations in this version. You get monsters, furniture, doors and the regular tiles in this Game System vs the plastic monsters, furniture and doors in the other version. The quest are also different and artwork for the screen and even the hero plastic minatures. You do however, get a double sided gameboard and dragon plastic miniature you won't get the other version. First Light will introduce you to the HeroQuest world. Although is says 2-5 players, you can technically play this solo with the HeroQuest Companion App. The app can be a bit quirky at times, but for the most part it works. One player play as Mentor/Zargon while the other players will pick on of four heroes to play. Zargon is the evil one that controls the monsters that try to stop the heroes from reaching their goal. Mentor is the one that gives the quest information and storyline and occassionally helps the heroes. The heroes are a Barbarian (highest attack and body points), Dwarf (can disarm traps without a kit and has a better chance to do so), Elf (mix fighter, magic user) and Wizard (spell user). These heroes need to work together to survive the various quests. The quest begin with Mentor giving the heroes information on what their goal is. Then the board is setup with the four heroes at their starting point and play begins with each hero taking a turn. When all heroes have completed their turns, it's Zargon's turn. Heroes get to move and perform an action or perform the action and then move. Actions are Attack, Search (treasure, traps, secret doors), cast a spell or disarm a trap. You cannot search when monsters are present (in Line of Sight). Movement is done by rolling the two six sided dice and moving up to that number of squares. Attacking uses combat dice and depending on your weapon, you roll anywhere from 1 to 4 combat dice and each skull represents a 'hit'. Some spells require the roll of either the movement six sided or combat dice depending on the spell cast, while others you'll just follow the instructions on the card. You'll have the hero cards and the Character sheets to track body points and equipment. You don't roll for stats, but there are Artifacts and equipment that can boost your starting stats. Zargon's turn means it the mosters time to move and attack or attack and move. Monsters have a set movement value and do not roll dice. They have values for Attack Dice, Defence Dice, Body Points and Mind Points. Just like the heroes except heroes again use movement dice and not a set value. Play as Zargon means you layout everything as the heroes discover it. So when a hero moves into a new area or opens a door, you layout that new area whether is a corridor or a room. You also are the only one that should have the questbook with the map and quest notes. Quest notes are for you eyes only and you don't make the heroes aware until they enter the area or trigger the event the notes reference. Sometimes the notes are just a reference for an evil mage or other villian so you have their stats and possibly any spells they can cast. Most of the time, the notes let you know what the heroes find if they search a room (corridors cannot be search for treasure). So everything you need is in the box. If you like HeroQuest and want to get expansions, you can because this box has the rules you need to play. So far, all expansion use only the original board layout and First Light is the only box set that uses both layouts of the gameboard. If you buy this, you don't really need to buy the more expensive large box unless you want the plastic miniatures and furniture.

This game was exactly what I was looking for. If you like the idea of dungeons and dragons, but want a more streamlined ‘dungeon crawling’ experience without the role playing this is a great option for you. I will say I could not hold my son’s attention beyond the first dungeon (he’s 7). Older kids, teens, or adults would have no issues picking it up and playing. The board was good quality, but I wasn’t too fond of the cardboard enemies, doors, and furniture. I know it was to keep price down, but having plastic minis would really elevate the experience. You do get plastic mini heroes and main boss which is a huge plus. Overall I highly recommend and can’t wait until my kids are just a little bit older to play again.

Game was exactly as I expected.

I love that this is a more affordable starter pack. My husband and I had been wanting to buy this for our son for a few months but the starter pack with all the miniatures (which is fun!) is much more expensive so we kept putting it off. I was excited when we ran across this for $50 at Target. We had the best time playing this together. The game didn't take too long, even though we had never played before, but was still fun and interesting. Something to consider is that the cardboard pieces might not last long if you have several small children, I definitely expect to need to replace them over time. But overall this is a good deal because this contains a lot of pieces.

My son loves this version of the release game system, and it's more travel friendly than the mythic tier system. Hasbro to has done an excellent job.

HeroQuest First Light is an amazing introduction to this exciting game. As a long time collector I can also say it is great for folks who’ve been playing for 30 years as well! It includes new hero models and a dragon model. I find it incredibly useful as a portable version of the game as well (easily tossed into a suitcase for a trip). The cardboard standees are a deviation from the norm, but they are very high quality and give you a great dungeon feel. And I forgot to mention that this set is the first new official alternate board for the game, which I love.

Great product at a great price. Not sure why it was a Target exclusive but as a collector I will take it, since the price was really good and the pre-order worked out great.

Been playing heroquest since i was 10. this is a re-release of the original with ten new quests and a new monster. a def recommend. and would def order from Target again, easy to order, fast shipping, and they update you about your order. Target is awesome.

Great expansion/starter set of the classic HeroQuest amazing to teach kids different way to cooperate in team! And big nostalgic experience for adults that played as a kid. Please disregard the 1 stars reviews of people that are judging the shipping but not the product itself!

This a great introduction into the world of HeroQuest. Plus there's at least 7 expansions I believe, lots of adventures to go on. The miniatures are great as well, really fun to paint and just over all great. Family friendly too, lots of fun.
