A: Instant cold packs are made out of ammonium nitrate or calcium ammonium nitrate and a small pouch of water in a plastic pack/bag, when the pack is crushed by hand the two mix and an endothermic reaction occurs and voila, you have a cold pack for about 20-30mins. If you're wondering, yes you can take these on planes.

Q: How cold does this actually get? Can you keep some food cool enough? Does it only last for 20 or 30 minutes and then it doesn't work anymore? Or are they reusable?

These packs are designed to provide cold therapy for a short period, usually around 20-30 minutes. They are not reusable.

I have POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), and sometimes I use ice on the face and/or breastbone to help reset the vagus nerve when I experience tachycardia. I’ve started carrying these around in my bag for this use when we are out and about. They work in a pinch, get cold quickly, easy to carry. They’d also be great for a first aid use if needed.

Absolutely wasted my money. Either these were already used by someone and returned, or they just do not work. I’ve used pop and shake cool packs before. These did not work at all. Very disappointed.

I bought these to help with a migraine on a road trip. It stayed cold for about 5 minutes then barely cool after shaking many times for maybe 5 more minutes. I used both in the box and didn't even get 20 minutes of relief. Just bring a couple sandwich bags and stop at Starbucks or Sonic and get some ice.

These work, but they don’t get particularly cold or stay cold very long. That seems to be a limitation of this cold of cold pack, of course. I bought them to help with headaches during a road trip, and they were at at least a nice cooling effect when I didn’t have a regular ice pack.

I recently had surgery and used Medline's instant cold packs in the hospital. Normal ice packs have not worked for me for this use case at all. I got these are a holdover while waiting for a case from Medline to arrive and they work great. You shouldn't expect an instant cold pack to last more than 15-20 minutes, nor should you expect it to be extremely cold. These get the same level of cold as a standard ice pack, last 15-20min at optimum temperature before they start to get less cold (probably 30min before they begin to warm, pending your body and the environment temps), and have had no trouble with leakage. Any instant pack can be finicky to pop. You need to kinda feel for the big chunk, gold the pack over, and gradually push until you feel it pop. Taking a hammer to it is, frankly, stupid, and it's not effective in any way. Sometimes it takes a little extra effort to find the pop, which even nurses struggle with on occasion. Once you get it, which is fairly quick most of the time anyway, you shake it and it's instantly cold. Personally, I'm impressed by the generic brand working nearly as well as Medline's. If they offered a pack with more or were cheaper, I'd have considered these. I really like that the exterior is papery and not plastic. I put that in a pillowcase for the protective layer and definitely preferred the paper version.

Good idea for emergency kit but I find it difficult to break packs to make them cold. I even tried a hammer to no avail. Finally strong hubby sweetly squeezed the pack to release cold therapy.

I use these as cold therapy for panic attacks. I always carry them in my purse and when I feel an attack coming on I use it on the back of my neck and hold them in my hands. They get freezing cold which is great but only stay extremely cold for 10-15 min.
