Q: When you are installing the gate, does it cause lots of damage to the walls?

submitted by IZY - 8 years ago
  • A: The KidCo Safeway is a wall mounted gate so you will need to screw brackets into the wall. Please make sure to attach brackets to stud behind the drywall otherwise the brackets will come out of the wall. Thank you,

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 8 years ago

  • A: No extra damage when installing besides the screw holes to screw the gate to the wall. I will say that the gate will swing flush with the wall and if you don't put something to protect where the gate hits the wall when open it could damage the wall when opened too roughly.

submitted bymockingfly - 8 years ago
  • A: If you install it correctly there should be no damage. The hinged part of the gate attaches at top and bottom to the doorway or wall. Two separate small pieces attach to the opposite side of the doorway or wall. Mine are all in doorways, so I didn't have any problems or damage.

submitted byRC Bunny Mom - 8 years ago

Q: Does it slide smaller when I open it

submitted by Roseannad - 8 years ago
  • A: No. You adjust it to the width you need when you install it using a bolt. It swings open like a door.

submitted byNicole - 8 years ago
  • A: The Safeway Wall Mounted Gate remains the same size when opened.

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 8 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: no, the gate size remains the same -- gate swings open.

submitted byCarol - 8 years ago

Q: How do you extend to a specific doorway width if the holes with the brackets don't align at that spot?

submitted by Stacey - 3 years ago
  • A: If you provide a picture and measurements to information@kidco.com, KidCo's Customer Service could let you know if the gate you purchased will work in the area you are trying to secure. Based on information provided, an Angle Mount Gate may be needed.

Q: what are dimensions of gate

submitted by tilly - 4 years ago
  • A: The gate width is 24.75 - 43.5"; height is 30.5".

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 4 years ago
    Brand expert

Q: can this gate be used outdoors?

submitted by Mo - 4 years ago
  • A: Kidco gates are made for indoor use only and not treated with any type of rust inhibitor.

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 4 years ago
    Brand expert

Q: Does this product come with an extension to make it fit a 50 in long opening?

submitted by MHunt - 4 years ago
  • A: The widest the Safeway gate can expand is 42.5". This gate model does not have extensions.

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 4 years ago
    Brand expert

Q: Can this gate be temporarily removed off the hinges and then easily put back on?

submitted by kf - 5 years ago
  • A: The Safeway gate can be removed from the wall by removing the lower hinge cap and lifting the gate from the hinges. Can be reinstalled the same way, removing the cap and placing the spindles in the brackets.

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 5 years ago
    Brand expert

Q: will this gate swing beyond an 90 degree angle? I'd ideally like it to swing back to a 180 degrees when not needed. Will it do that?

submitted by PBYoung - 6 years ago
  • A: The Safeway gate could open to 180 degrees if the hinge side brackets are mounted on the front of the wall/stairway and not the inside.

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 6 years ago
    Brand expert

Q: Does the hardware allow you to mount the hinge on the left or the right side (if you are looking down the stairs)? Or does it only mount to one side door to the stopper feature?

submitted by Kristin - 6 years ago
  • A: The hinge side of the gate can be mounted on either side of the stairs and the stop pins will be placed so the gate doesn't open out towards the stairs.

submitted byKidCo Customer Care - 6 years ago
    Brand expert

Q: Is the railing mount included?

submitted by caship4 - 6 years ago
  • A: The hardware is included to mount the KidCo Safeway Gate, but installation aids such as the K100 or K12 need to be purchased separately.

A Pain - Not Worth It

I'm a pretty handy person - I can install things, put together furniture, replace my thermostat...I got this gate for my new dog so he won't run out the door, and ... it took hours and hours, was infuriating, and if I didn't have a new fearful dog I would've been yelling at this gate. The instructions were terrible - not clear at ALL and good luck telling everything apart. The templates didn't work for me - things ended up misaligned and I had to redrill 3 times. And after all of my struggling...it still doesn't work completely smoothly. I'm glad it's just for a dog and not for a baby and actual safety.

I love this gate because it's functional, sturdy & nice to look at, plus, it keeps my fur baby where I want him to be in my house. The hardware that attaches to the wall is a must since we have a large English labrador. The gate can easily come off the hardware if you want to open the area again between rooms & it's simple to re-attach. We purchased 2 of them.

Dangerous

This has been installed at the top of our stairs for less than a month. Already the plastic clip that "locks" the gate in place is so weakened, that you only barely need to touch the latch and it easily disengages. Our 13-month-old son was mere seconds away from falling down our stairs. Luckily I was right next to him and heard the gate latch click open.

The latch is not at all safe for stair use. It's just not very secure. We have the gate at the bottom of the stairs and are now replacing it because my toddler was able to shake the gate free of the latch.

Works well for pets

Bought to prevent dogs from going to basement, but allow cats access (they jump over), with option for humans to go thru. Works very well for this purpose. Was simple enough to install, and is sturdy. My only minor issue with it is the little peg that keeps the gate from swinging the opposite direction does seem inadequate - it seems to fly right over it sometimes when trying to close it. I could definitely see this being a problem if this were over stairs.

The wall-mounted hardware at the bottom is installed about 2.5 inches from the floor, which makes this gate a problem to install if you have base molding. The screws and hardware would overlap with the top and beveling of the molding and cause an uneven mount. In the video it appears they have installed it on a wall with molding, but I cannot see how to make this kind of installation without risking damage or an uneven mount that sticks up halfway over the molding.

Have a professional install!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I put this gate together and installed it myself. It took about two hours total. We have had many baby/pet gates before, but this was the first that opened the entire width of the door frame and actually looked sophisticated. The only real problem with this gate is that there is very little room for error when installing it. First off, I recommend putting your spindles on the ends before checking the gate length and connecting the two gate pieces together as the spindles add several inches. For some reason the instructions have you doing this AFTER picking your gate length and connecting the two gate pieces to each other. I also got very frustrated with the screws that connect the two gate pieces together. The screws have to line up exact which requires having another person pull up or down to counter the gate’s tendency to pull down towards the heavier end of the gate. The box included a guide to line up your screws for the hinge and locking wall pieces to ensure proper placement. I taped it to the wall and was careful to measure each side of the screw space shown in the image to ensure it was exactly even on both sides of each wall. I also drilled holes in the wall before placing the screws in. Once I put the gate on the hinges I did need to adjust for a slight rise on the lock side. I did this by lengthing the top hinge spindle and shortening the lower hinge spindle. To open, you press down on the lock while lifting the gate up and out. My almost two-year-old definitely is not able to open it, but my five-year-old can. And my dogs, who have knocked down gates in the past, can’t get past it. Overall, it was very difficult to install, but I am happy with the finished product.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a very secure gate. We tried a tension mount walk through gate but the little guy could move it. The hardware mounted gate is much more secure. I was worried the screws would put huge holes in my banister. They are not huge but are very secure. It is very easy to operate and walk through carrying the little guy. I also appreciated the fact it was a darker color. To me it blends in more than bright white.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recieved this baby gate a few days ago and am really happy with it. I have a 15 month old and he pushes the pressure gates over but with this gate it mounts to the wall and is very secure. I love how there is not a bar you have to step over like other gates I've seen. I reccomend this baby gate and plan on getting another one for my hallway.

Excellent Quality Gate

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This "G2001 - Safeway Black Gate" is very well made and stylish. Easy to open for an adult, but secure for small children. The installation is more permanent than some of the pressure fit type gates as you do have to screw it into the wall. If you put it into a stud on both sides, the gate easily holds up to toddlers hanging from it and bigger kids climbing over. I would rate the install as moderately difficult and it is helpful to have 2 adults to do it. Tools needed are a drill with a small drill bit and Phillips screwdriver or bit, pencil and a level. This is a gate for a place that you will need it for a few months to a few years. After it is no longer needed, you can remove the screws, fill the holes and touch up the paint and you won't even know it was there. Good quality product. Highly recommend.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We use this at the top of our steps for added safety for our 2-year-old son who is just learning to use the stairs. It was easy to install with a few tools and seems very sturdy. Our son likes to push on it because he has seen us open and close it so he tries but it holds fast in place and doesn't budge. We will definitely be keeping it up for the next one.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Gate was really easy to install. The gate is very sturdy. It wasn’t too heavy. Once the gate was installed, the gate was very easy to use. It is designed for easy removal as well. The gate also mounts safely and securely, which puts my mind at ease. The late night half asleep life of a parent, I really liked that it's easy to open and close and you can do it one handed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When I bought this gate a week ago I never expected it to be so easy to install. I didn't need a drill only a Phillips screwdriver and the wrench that they provided. The Safeway Black Gate has safe features for top of stairways and you dont have to be mechanically advanced to install it. I highly recommend it with anyone with kids or pets.
