Great Lego Book Nook

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the packaging is beautiful in the black elegant box. The structural design feels solid, and the bricks are the high-quality plastic you'd expect from LEGO. The overall LEGO experience is definitely great. The columns are designed with geometry and are very versatile. The color gradient is effective in creating the illusion of fire. The Balrog is very intimidating with its size compared to Gandalf. It is an improved design vs in the video game. I LOVE the flames in the background. They do have a distinct look, & its very nice.. It does not interfere with Balrog's wings when the nook closes. Love the set and I can't wait to see the next design. Thank you so much.
I love it.

Looks better in person, and I hope they do a scene from each part of the trilogy.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It was so fun to build this Lego. The packaging was great, the instructions were very easy to follow since it has images. It took us a while to finish it, but we enjoyed the process.
It’s a Balrog, Nuff Said

I don’t understand the prevalence of negative reviews about the ‘book nook’ component of the build. I would think most people, like myself, were interested in this set for one reason - the Balrog. When LOTR first became a Lego theme, we all wanted to see this. We all wanted one of the coolest and most unique terrors of Middle Earth. But for many years it looked as though that hope was lost. Now it’s finally realized, against all expectation, and people seem to be upset that the random background stuff is somehow lackluster. Rather than complain that we didn’t get to invest in an unnecessarily huge Moria backdrop just to get the Balrog, I’m grateful that Lego was able to come up with a clever way to keep the set piece rather minimal and actually potentially useful. Not to mention - I would argue - cost-effective. Yes, I know this set is expensive. So is everything. Especially licensed goods. The fact is they could’ve asked us to pay a lot more for various ruins we didn’t need. Instead we got a Balrog and a dwarven scaffold we can use as a book spacer. Personally, I’m very happy with that.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Such a fun looking lego set. Packaging makes it look more fun. I have yet to build it so i’m hoping it’s something we can all enjoy! Seems like it’s very durable!

I’ve really gotten into Legos as an adult. I’ve built most of the Art sets, nearly all of the botanicals, a couple castles, and other miscellaneous smaller things. I cannot stress enough how much I didn’t like the experience of this build. There is SO MUCH negative space, I feel like the flames could be doing more. The build itself is surprisingly flimsy. As I was putting it together, some columns would pop off if I just turned it wrong. Somehow this feels flimsier than even some of the bouquets. Around half way through I just wanted to give up and felt like my eyes were crossing with all of the exceptionally tiny pieces that make up the Balrog. That being said, it still looks cool. Since it is just going to sit on a shelf, the flimsiness won’t really matter.
Such a fun time & so detailed

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the coolest Lego set I’ve built! I was not missing any parts but ended up having a few extras with almost every bag. The guide is very detailed and helpful, we definitely would not have been able to build anything without it. The balrog itself seems kinda flimsy and the feet do not clip on to anything which I felt was kind of a bummer for stability purposes especially if you decide to actually use it for a book nook. I personally will be using it as decoration in fear that something may break. When you close it into its smaller form, the left side does not want to sit flush and clip in anyways. However, It could just be something faulty with the Legos in that specific pack. I would definitely buy something like this in the future. The theme really added to the fun.
Excellent product!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great build for any LEGO and LOTR fan. Has a lot of smaller pieces that form these interesting mechanisms to let the wings fold up. The instruction booklet has fun facts related to the set inside and quotes from the books to enjoy while you build. The bags are easily labeled so if you don’t want to marathon build you can space it out in smaller sessions easily.
if you are LOTR fan this is a build for you

I bought both this set and the Sherlock Holmes set. They cost the same, yet their value couldn’t be more different. This set is a mech set with a bad frame, while the Holmes set is a storybook! The Balrog itself is decent, but this is what you are essentially paying for. The frame itself is superfluous. The flames are cheap looking and flimsy. There was every chance to enclose it all with a proper book cover. With it open there could have been inside the mountain. It’s unfinished. Meanwhile the Holm s set has hidden rooms and moving pieces. It look great open and closed. I feel cheated by this set in comparison.
I love it

I created a lego account just to correct the low ratings that this build seems to have. I think it is an excellent build, I put it together with my 4 year old son. He was enraptured with guessing how the Balrog was going to look when it was finally put together, he delighted in opening and closing the display (not going to lie, so did I), and he walked around our house saying in his best gandalf voice "you shall not pass" it was great. If you like lego, lord of the rings, and have the disposable income to purchase this set - I would highly recommend it! M.

This is a great display set. Captures the scene and was a good build experience. Looks great open and really good closed to fit in the shelf.

Reading the reviews for this product I came in with low expectations. While it is a bit of a finiky build, and doesn't feel very sturdy, I found it an enjoyable build and when used as a book nook (it sits in my bookshelf in my office), It gives the appearance of being much bigger and more complicated than it actually is which has a cool effect on the books it is tucked between. Overall, better than expected with my favorite part of this build being the way it integrates into my bookshelf.
Pretty sweet for parts, whole not so much

Balrog looks great displayed next to Barad, Gandalf looks better than ever hanging out in another scene, and the build itself modified into a nice backdrop for yet another scene. As is, was not a fan though tbh.
Excellent set for display!

A pleasure to build and display. I love the option for it to be displayed open or closed. The way the wings fit into the wall frames is very clever.

It's very expensive for not very much. It's definitely an awesome looking set when viewed from afar but wasn't very impressive while building. You have to build the exact same thing twice when building the two "walls." It was very repetitive. I think my biggest complaint is the whip. It's pretty sad looking and cheap.
pricey but still a great kit

We all love LOTR and this set really pulled hit it off with the boys. for the cost... I'd give it a "C" just because it's known Lego has gotten expensive. But, for the reaction my kids gave when they saw the box and put it together... still an A+ reaction and they love the display. Not a complicated build, a little delicate but very good add to the collection.

This is my least favourite of the new line of LOTR sets (although that is a very high bar) but I’d still consider this a good set overall. The price isn’t great but it is better than the very expensive Shire set that was released earlier this year. Only one mini figure is disappointing but it does make sense for the scene. The balrog is….decent looking. Not horrible, not great. I do however like the dwarven architecture of the pillars with the colour gradient technique that we saw first on the Barad-dur set that reflects the flames. Overall I’d say this is a decent set. I like that it can expand to show the size of the balrog but it can also fit into a smaller space. Hopefully this is a sign of more smaller LOTR sets are on their way in the future. The big sets are great but they do take up a lot of space and are very expensive.
