Activist and journalist Shaun King reflects on the events that made him one of the most prominent social justice leaders of our time and lays out a clear action plan for you to join the fight--with a foreword from Bernie SandersBook Synopsis
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "A captivating memoir of change. A hope-filled sermon for change. A tactical blueprint for how we can each make change. Make Change is all three and all the more towards an equitable and just world."--Ibram X. Kendi, National Book Award-winning author of Stamped from the Beginning and How to Be an Antiracist Activist and journalist Shaun King reflects on the events that made him one of the most prominent social justice leaders of our time and lays out a clear action plan for you to join the fight. As a leader of the Black Lives Matter movement, Shaun King has become one of the most recognizable and powerful voices on the front lines of civil rights in our time. His commitment to reforming the justice system and making America a more equitable place has brought challenges and triumphs, soaring victories and crushing defeats. Throughout his wide-ranging activism, King's commentary remains rooted in both exhaustive research and abundant passion. In Make Change, King offers an inspiring look at the moments that have shaped his life and considers the ways social movements can grow and evolve in this hyper-connected era. He shares stories from his efforts leading the Raise the Age campaign and his work fighting police brutality, while providing a roadmap for how to stay sane, safe, and motivated even in the worst of political climates. By turns infuriating, inspiring, and educational, Make Change will resonate with those who believe that America can--and must--do better.

I absolutely loved this book. As someone who struggles with seeing the state of affairs in the United States, and not knowing how I can make change, this book spoke to me deeply. This book has given me hope that I can become an agent of change, while giving me a very clear blueprint on how to be an effective change agent. The audible narration is a must! You get to hear introductions by prominent people in hip hop and activism, and hearing Shaun tell his story in his voice makes the story all the more poignant, and the soulful music is the extra seasoning that makes the book fire on all cylinders. I have never read a book that was more relevant to the times I was living in. This is an absolute must read. If I could, I'd give it 1000 stars.

Thank you, Shaun, for clearly outlining how to create change. I love how Shaun shares his experiences for his readers to empathize with and learn from. He shows us exactly how we can work together to create change. What I love the most is that his teachings can be applied to ANY organization or movement you are passionate about, and he encourages the reader to focus on a movement that is most meaningful to them. I feel courageous and hopeful for the first time in a long time thanks to this book.

I bought the audio book because of the special features (see list below - AMAZING LINEUP!) and because I have anywhere between 30-60 minute drives when I have to do specific errands and love utilizing that time to "read/listen." But I knew I also wanted the hardcover book for my home library. It really helps me to listen AND read simultaneously when I can - super helpful for comprehension and retention! Admittedly, I was initially intimidated, early on in the book, when Shaun King challenged me to find that "one" cause that keeps you up at night - I grew anxious and immediately thought - "I can't possibly choose one cause, omg I'm a bad person because I can't do this one exercise correctly and effectively!" But that's the beauty of Shaun's words - I grew more and more inspired, and patient with myself, as I moved through the book. I'm still trying to figure things out for myself, and how to navigate through this crazy space I find myself in, during a pandemic, on employment furlough, as a "passive" activist; but, I feel like I have a much better idea of how I can actively contribute to substantive and effective change (well beyond double-clicking on images or clicking that "love" button, or retweeting or sharing posts. I also appreciate the entire chapter on self-care. Empathy fatigue is no joke. And I'm just learning how to best deal with the emotional and mental triggers from comments, images and video on my fb and ig feeds. This book was the "manual" I was looking for to help propel me forward, and inspire me to persevere, despite setbacks and dips.

Make Change is a must read! Shaun King inspires me to be more active on a local level. I bought the printed copy and the audio version. The audio version is the perfect companion for my long walks after work. I discovered Shaun following the release of the Ahmaud Arberry video. Watching that video of Arberry's murder shook me to my core and I was looking for a way to make an impact and that's when I discovered Shaun King. He setup meaningful ways to get involved by making calls to local/state officials and signing super petitions. I made calls every day for 2.5 weeks until all three people responsible for Arberry's murder were arrested and charged! I felt like I contributed in some small way and that was all because of Shaun King.
If you want to make change, but have no idea how to get started, this is the book for you! And if you're not an avid reader like myself, then the audio book is the way to go.

Absolutely worth every dime. It doesn’t take much to want to support this man and learn from all he has to offer. The negative ones try to bring him down but love and his push for the power of positive change will win. Not them

The book “Make Change” is an astounding book. The book not only covers what it means to be an advocate for social change, but it gives us a narrative of someone who has been at the forefront of justice for a long time. Shaun King is the Malcolm X of the 21st century. This book proves that. He is controlling his own narrative, the narrative of his place in the Black Lives Matter movement(s), a shift from total environmental justice to justice for black lives that need to matter, and the sacrifice of facing police brutality head on. I love how chapter one part one begins. I do believe “picking up this book is picking up a representation of what a better future for this world would mean”. As hyperbolic as this sentiment sounds it is true. Just as Malcolm X’s autobiography detailed Shaun’s gives us a glimpse of a ‘black man’s’ wounds and how these tragedies were turned in to triumphs. One of my co-workers named Lynette put it this way “I’m trouble when they need it”. Apparently, too many people needed Shaun King to be trouble. Shaun will show us how difficult it is to recognize a historical movement when you are living in that moment. “Detroit Red” did not recognize the moment he was living in until his prison conversion and origin story of how he became Malcolm X and later El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. First a person ‘Elijah Muhammad’ changed him and then an experience ‘Hajj/Pilgrimage’ changed him. Shaun’s social and philosophical pilgrimage is what changed him for the better. These days he would challenge partisan politicians on either side of the isle when they come about. Shaun also notes how his social justice activism affects his family. If nothing else, you must read this book to find out how he has fought to prove he is not a white man. Yes! That has been an argument from friends, colleagues and enemies of his (page 54). My last spoiler for the book is that someone put what they thought his race was on a police report and that false report gain steam and became a “thorn in his side”. This part of the book alone makes for an interesting story and could fill its own movie or miniseries. One day we are going to see this movie or miniseries and I pray that Shaun King continues to control his story so that nothing is twisted.
Get this book if you have not already!
I pre-ordered it and will be getting the audio version and digital version.

I could NOT put this book down. From the inspiring foreword written by Bernie Sanders to the motivational, in depth story of Shaun's life and experiences that led him to this Movement. Everything has led up to this moment, this Movement and we cannot stop here. We must continue to do the work, to share and educate others, to fight for our Black and Brown brothers and sisters. Shaun helps readers understand what they can do, they steps they can take to make meaningful change.
Also. I hate reading. I really do. It's saying something that I couldn't stop reading this!!
If you're on the fence, get it! Get motivated! Make Change!
