Q: Can this be used to repost orchids?

  • A: I wouldn't. Bark is better for drainage, which is better for orchids.

Q: What is the wetting agent? Can I grow plants that I'll consume in this soil without worrying about this?

submitted by VL - 8 months ago
  • A: The wetting agent in Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix is a proprietary ingredient. The purpose of the wetting agent is to promote water adsorption by the soil which is naturally hydrophobic and repels water. All of our potting soils/mixes can be used for planting edibles (fruits, vegetables, and herbs) in containers or raised beds.

I did not see this when I bought the dirt, but it isn't made to keep moisture IN, but to kind of wick it away so you don't OVERWATER your plant. Fine for some indoor plants, but we live in a desert area, and, really, we want to get soil that keeps moisture IN, not drains it away. I am not an expert, but I was told all this by a customer who raises lots of flowers...

Problems with mold and fungus gnats!

Within the last three months I pursued the task of repotting my houseplants. I had two bags of Miracle Gro Potting Mix that I had purchased within the last year. Very shortly after transplanting them, I noticed small black flies (or gnats) and mold in the ones I had transplanted. So far I haven't lost any plants but I put sticky traps in the pots and am amazed at how many are getting caught! Am very disappointed with the current product... never used to be a problem but evidently people all over the country are complaining about this.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with MiracleGro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. We recommend letting the soil dry out between each watering as overwatering can make the problem worse. Leaving the soil to dry can help kill the larvae. Additionally, you may apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of established potted container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. Do not apply sand to seedlings or if trying to start plants from seeds. This can damage or hinder seedling development. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-295-6902 if we can further assist.

I had tiny flies in my house for 3 months until I finally discovered where they were coming from. It was this potting soil. I will NEVER buy this again!

I'm no gardner, but I just needed potting soil for some house plants. As far as I can tell, this is exactly what I'd expect: decent potting soil like other soil products I've seen. Nothing strikes me as bad about it. The bag doesn't rip and stores easily.

The bags soak up rain like a sponge and are way too heavy to mess with. Not to mention they reek like a manure and are filthy. Why are these not required to be kept covered ? It's the difference between using 60+ bags a year and zero.

    It's Killing My Plants

I have used yellow bag Miracle Gro product for years with great success, but with some gnat issues. This time I puchased 6 bags of the potting mix in the gray bag a week ago to repot and freshen the soil of my older plants to get fresh nutrients. Now they are dying. At first I thought it was just the shock of being moved from one pot to the other, but no. The 5 plants I repotted are 15yrs and older. The leaves have drooped, curled, and turned yellow. I'm not sure that I can save them. I have not seen any gnats, but it is traumatic for me to lose plants that I nurtured to maturity.

    You ruined your product

I used to enjoy repotting my plants. I'd buy a yellow bag or two of Miracle Grow potting mix and get my hands dirty. It was great. I neither knew of nor had I ever seen a fungus gnat. Neither had my beloved indoor plants, the oldest one arriving back in 2001 as a gift. I wish that were still the case. It all seemed so easy back then. Now, I delay repotting as long as I can. I hate it. I hate the new fungus gnats I'll have to deal with every time I repot my plants or even top off their pot with a new layer of soil. It used to be a relaxing afternoon, now it stresses me out. Please don't reply about how they don't affect plants or humans. They affect humans even if they don't attack them. And they're not just a nuisance. Daylight savings time is a day or two of nuisance. This is weeks of infestation that requires all kinds of extra work and discomfort in one's own home. And please don't respond saying the fungus gnats get in through the air holes (i.e., not your fault) when those air holes have always been there, and yet there were no fungus gnats years ago in your potting soil. You ruined your own quality potting soil, and my love of indoor gardening. I LOVED your product. Now I hate it.

I planted a bunch of plants from seedlings. They were doing well. However, I got very sick. I have a high amount of bacteria and mold in my blood. I tested my brand new home with mold test and have mold in the air. Tested my blood, and it now has a very very high amount of bacteria. On top of that, I had gnats. Looked at the soil through a microscope, and you can see the bacteria in the soil. Is this just mulch soil from the dump?

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix with Fertilizer and appreciate your feedback. Fungus gnats do not typically damage houseplants but they are a nuisance. The larvae look like tiny white grubs or maggots and feed on the fungus that naturally grows in potting soil. The adults are small and dark and may enter the air holes in the bag to lay eggs while the soil is waiting for sale. 1. Let the soil dry out between each watering. Dry soil can help kill the larvae. Most people tend to overwater their plants and this can make the problem worse. 2. Yellow sticky traps are another alternative. Place them close to the location of the fungus gnats. 3. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of established potted container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. Do not apply sand to seedlings or if trying to start plants from seeds. This can damage or hinder seedling development. 4. Insects will not disappear overnight. It may take several weeks but the consumer should begin to see a reduction in insect numbers. All houseplants in the home must be treated. 5. Severely infested plants may need to be repotted however the larvae may remain in the root ball when the plant is moved to a new pot. Remember the larvae themselves rarely damage plants but eat the fungus that grows in all unsterilized potting soil. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. As mentioned by other reviewers, my plants are dying with this soil. I bought several bags this year. Things i tpyically grow with ease, such as Mandevilla and vinca, have all died, regardless of light, location, and amount of water. The soil is very slow to dry. I use a moisture meter to check daily levels daily. I have always preferred Scotts soil, but something is not right with the moisture control blend.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil). Allow the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering will help control the larvae. Apply at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Horticultural sand should be left on the container for several weeks, until the problem is solved. We want you to be confident in our products. Not feeding and keeping the plants green and pretty like previous years and the tomato plants got the over watered look, not like when I used it in prior years. Kind of wonder if they mixed the bags up at the factory.

This is the worst potting soil I have ever bought! It is so dense that my plant’s roots are growing upwards and most of them are dying. I think out of maybe 40+ plants 3 of them like “wet feet”, the soil never dries out. I've had to buy all new potting soil and had to repot all my plants, vegetables & herbs. Hopefully, I can keep them all from dying. I am so irritated and disappointed in this potting soil. There should be a disclaimer on the package for which plants might “thrive” in this product.
