The larvae look like tiny white grubs or maggots and feed on the fungus that naturally grows in potting soil. The adults are small and dark and may enter the air holes in the bag to lay eggs while the soil is waiting for sale. 1. Let the soil dry out between each watering. Dry soil can help kill the larvae. Most people tend to overwater their plants and this can make the problem worse. 2. Yellow sticky traps are another alternative. Place them close to the location of the fungus gnats. 3. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of established potted container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die.
