About the Book

"When the creator of a high school gossip app mysteriously dies in front of four high-profile students all four become suspects. It's up to them to solve the case"--

Book Synopsis

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR, KAREN McMANUS

"Pretty Little Liars meets The Breakfast Club" (Entertainment Weekly) in this "flat-out addictive" (RT Book Reviews) story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who's still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

And don't miss the sequel, One of Us is Next!

Q: Is this book an easy read?!? Meaning my daughter who is 14 has trouble reading but trying to get her to where she likes reading and if it’s super hard of course she will sit it right done. Anyone know

submitted by Emily - 4 years ago
  • A: i’m gonna be honest with you, your intentions are wonderful but your means of going about it seem flawed from the outside perspective. try involving her in the process, take her to a bookstore and let her enjoy the process of skimming through and looking at the backs of books. i feel like if you’re just hand her a book and tell her to read she won’t enjoy it so much. but otherwise i’ve heard great things about the book!

Q: how long is the book? (pages?)

submitted by lauren - 7 years ago
  • A: The story goes to page 358, but the whole book is 360 pages.

So it is an easy read but it took to page 227 to get somewhat interesting- but enough that I cared. Maybe young adult is not my forte? Fast read if you want to finish it within two days. Definitely not a fav

Loved the book! I watched the TV show as well and found the book was much better. Only complaint is that it was hard for me to believe it took place in a high school. I’m not a writer, but personally, the setting didn’t exactly fit with the plot.

This book has solid character development. Each twist draws you in and keeps you hooked, wanting to know more and more. It’s a great young adult book, a whodunnit tale following the death of a high school student.

Torn cover

I disliked that the cover to this book was all crumpled and torn on the edges. It was not worth the hassle to deal with a return. And this was supposed to be a gift. I will not be buying anymore hardcover books to be shipped in the future. Very disappointing.

This book got me back into reading after a 3+ reading slump. It’s an easy and intriguing read. It leans into some high school stereotypes but I didn’t mind at all. Not only a great mystery but I love the way it unfolded. I’m so grateful this book got me back into reading!
