About the Author



Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has been translated into 70 languages and sold over 55 million copies. Carle illustrated more than seventy books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote, and more than 170 million copies of his books have sold around the world. In 2003, Carle received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award (now called the Children's Literature Legacy Award) for lifetime achievement in children's literature. In 2002, Eric and his wife, Barbara, cofounded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (www.carlemuseum.org) in Amherst, Massachusetts, a 40,000-square-foot space dedicated to the celebration of picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world, underscoring the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of picture books and their art form. Big Version of a Children's Classic!

I’m a preschool teacher and love how big this book is! The illustrations are bright and vivid and the book itself feels sturdy and durable. We love the little plush that comes with it!

Very large book

This is a nice book but too large for my eight month old granddaughter. It is approximately 11.5 inches X 15.5 inches unopened. This does not include the handle at the top of the book. The handle adds 2.5 inches to the 11.5 inches making the book 14 inches tall. The width opened will be 31 inches.

The pros and the cons

Arguably one of the best children's books ever! But where the small board book is too small, this one is too big. The holes are the size of quarters. The holes in other formats' pages are just right for a tiny finger to wiggle through. And the book arrived wrapped in a thin corrugated cardboard mailer, so the handles got bent, wrinkled, and started tearing. The caterpillar plush was adorable, but be prepared - it is small. Great for a tiny one to grasp as the book is read to them. Not a snuggling stuffed animal; think, "toy." I had to return it because the handles were damaged. I tried to buy it at a Target store but they don't sell this exact one. So I got the small board book and a teeter ring with a stuffed caterpillar attached to it for the tiny baby, and later, I'll get the separate plush caterpillar and the "hardcover" book (with paper pages and holes that are JUST right. Never met a kid who didn't love this book...and FYI, the book's author/illustrator Eric Carle is on YouTube reading this book.
