Q: Do these bottles work for rice cereal mixed with formula?

submitted by Rachel - 4 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your e-mail. We recommend checking with your pediatrician prior to adding cereal to a bottle. All of our nipples are designed for liquid flow so you will need to test several levels of nipples to determine what is appropriate when adding rice cereal. We recommend starting with a level 2 or 3 and adjust accordingly to the baby’s needs.

    No fuss is a must!

We love these bottles because there's no fuss, the straw and cap are at the center. We tried other bottles where the parts still move around after being closed/capped. These bottles are easy to put together and clean, making feeding easier. Also if you rent the Medela hospital pump, these are a perfect fit - you can pump straight into the bottle!

Best Bottles for Reducing Gas and Fussiness

I love Dr. Brown’s bottles! The vent system really helps with reducing gas and spit-up, my baby is so much more comfortable after feedings. The nipples have a natural flow that made the transition from breastfeeding super easy. Yes, they have a few extra parts to clean, but it’s completely worth it for the peace of mind and happier baby. Durable, reliable, and totally worth the investment.

    Causes baby to squeak

I don’t understand the hype around this brand of bottles. These caused my boy to squeak every time he swallowed. The flow level 1 was apparently too fast and he’s 2 months old with a super strong latch. Really disappointed. And the cleaning upkeep of these is terrible. Too many parts and tiny places residue can hide. The box got thrown away in the recycling so I really hope Target will let me return them.

    Insane Leaking

I really wanted to love these bottles, but unfortunately they’ve been nothing but frustrating. At first they seemed fine, but after a few weeks of use they started leaking constantly. The problem has only gotten worse over time. It feels like every feeding turns into a mess with milk dripping down the sides, soaking bibs and burp cloths, and wasting so much milk. I even watched all of the “how to fix the issue” videos and tried every suggestion, but nothing worked. For the price and reputation, I expected a much better product. Instead, I find myself dreading using them because they create more cleanup than convenience. Sadly, I can’t recommend these bottles—they just don’t hold up with regular use.

    Bottles leak excessively

Dr Bottles leak soooo much. I would never recommend these to anyone. Their page says I should stirring it with a spoon when I make the bottle, but it leaks anyways. It leaks when I make the bottle and it leaks when my baby is drinking it. I leaks more when I take out the insert but it’s advertised that you can remove it and use it. bd has the $2 parent choice bottles and never leak.

    Leaking!

I used Dr.Browns for my son, as well as my twins. I loved the bottles initially and they helped my babies have less gas and reflux. The NICU actually recommended we try these bottles to help with those issues and it worked initially! Unfortunately, they leak so so easily and I do believe this correlates with an inconsistent flow at times, leading to choking because the flow is too fast OR latching on and off due to very little output. It may be user error, but I’ve tried every trick in the book to fix the issue.

    Be Warned - Bottles Leak

My baby prefers these bottles and the flow more than any other brand, so we endure, but these bottles leak so bad. I thought it might be one bad bottle, but I have 7 of these and they all leak at one time or another - the bottles leak for around half of the feeds. Super annoying to waste breastmilk by having it run all over your hand and drip on the your/the baby’s clothes, to the point I have the change the baby’s shirt after feeds. I’ve tried all the advice from Youtube/Reddit to get the leaks to stop, but to no avail (and the fact that there are multiple videos/threads troubleshooting these bottles leaking should be a red flag itself)

    Great Bottles for Newborns

I love these bottles for my newborn—they’ve worked perfectly for us so far. I just wish they would go on sale more often so I could stock up, but honestly, they’re worth the price. If you’re exclusively formula feeding, I’d recommend getting at least 10 to make things easier throughout the day. Definitely a solid choice!
