Description

About the Book

A young woman the world has written off is secretly the most popular writer of Victorian England . . . but will her own story end as tragically as the heroine in her famous novels?

Book Synopsis

When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company.

When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, writing the family into the story as unflattering characters, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance--and perhaps even her father's death.

Author Joanna Davidson Politano's stunning debut set in Victorian England will delight readers with its highly original plot, lush setting, vibrant characters, and reluctant romance.

From the Back Cover

Lynhurst Manor is a house built on secrets . . . and the arrival of Aurelie Harcourt might reveal them all.

When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies suddenly, he leaves her just two things: his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll, and his wealthy family--who want very little to do with her.

As Aurelie struggles to find a home with her father's family and learn the rules of society, she relishes in his parting gift--the beginning of his last story. The story she always wanted to hear, about her mother's mysterious disappearance from the home where she now lives. To complete the novel, she'll have to extract clues from relatives--and one enigmatic houseguest--who often seem reluctant to give them up.

"Emotional. Intriguing. Both haunting and romantic. . . . In her historical fiction debut, Joanna Davidson Politano delivers a smart plot that navigates twists and turns with a mixture of wit, intelligent characters, and a refreshingly original voice. Reminiscent of Dickens's classic storytelling, Lady Jayne Disappears is a debut to remember!"--Kristy Cambron, bestselling author of The Illusionist's Apprentice and The Hidden Masterpiece series

"Wonderfully unique, this compelling debut grabs you from the first intriguing line. The evocative English setting, textured characters, literary theme, and unusual romance make Lady Jayne Disappears a standout, the lovely cover offering a hint of the gem within. A must read!"--Laura Frantz, author of A Moonbow Night

A well deserved award winning book, Lady Jayne Disappears is a haunting Victorian tale complete with a modicum of Little Dorritt amongst an original cast of complicated characters and mysterious events. The subplots are impeccably paced and the journey to learn more of Lady Jayne is worth taking. I continue to enjoy audiobooks narrated by Justine Eyre. She brings a wonderful narrating flair which is so well suited for books set in England. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language.

Do you enjoy finding the answer to unanswered questions that have more twists and turns than a country road? Just hold on for the bumpy ride and eventually it will all come together in an expertly crafted writing style from this fresh breath of air author. The setting is 1861 England and the feel is slightly gothic with multiple characters who have unique personalities that worm their way into your heart. You will dwell on this one when finished. I throughly enjoyed this one. I’ve had this on my TBR pile and wish I had moved it up.
