A great sapphic ya!!
A sapphic romance written by two wives? sold! I’m kind of joking but when I read that the authors were married and wrote a book together, I was literally so excited. And it’s sapphic? I need nothing more in this world All joking aside, this was such a wonderful sapphic, YA novel. If you know me, you know that I love YA romance books that show teenagers as teenagers (messy, stupid, a little annoying). She Gets the Girl is exactly that! Two college freshman discovering themselves outside of their hometowns, pining for women who aren’t the one for them, and falling in love along the way Turns out I’m a sucker for the “I’ll help you get ___ (who isn’t me) who you are secretly in love with” trope. I was a little worried going into this one because Better Than Movies was the last book I read under this umbrella and I wasn’t a huge fan. All of the issues I had with that book were handled perfectly in She Gets the Girl. I feel like Alex and Molly complimented each other so nicely and their relationship developed so naturally. It was truly a ant-friends (enemies feels too strong) to friends to lovers. They brought out the best in each other and at no point did I feel like Alex was trying to change Molly in order to help her get Cora. Instead Alex coaxed Molly out of her shell, cheered her on, and fell in love with her in the process. Even the makeover montage-esque moments turned the cliche on its head. Instead of changing her, Alex gave Molly the confidence and support to help her find her style and evolve from her high school self. And while I’ve mostly talked about the positive impact Alex had on Molly, I would be remiss if I didn’t say how much I loved seeing Molly help Alex discover her worth and help her see that she is worthy of love TLDR: this book hit all the marks with me. It was the perfect amount of sweet, reflective, and a little cheesy. I think Derrick and Lippincott’s writing styles complimented each other so well and gave each character a unique voice and perspective. I cannot wait to read what they both write in the future, and maybe if we are lucky they will collaborate again
