Fun, suspenseful YA thriller
Rating is 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. The Girl Who Knew Too Much feels like a fusion of Survivor and Tomb Raider. After a school expulsion and major social media humiliation, Riley decides to try and repair her reputation by participating in a reality tv show involving 20 teens on a remote Brazilian island. A hunt for priceless, cursed, Incan treasure is added to the competition for the million-dollar reality show prize, which really ramps up the danger and suspense. I really liked how the inner workings of the reality show were exposed and found the treasure hunt lore interesting. At first, Riley was an insecure navel-gazer, but she grows during her time on the island, learns to focus outside of herself, and realizes there are far bigger problems than those she has faced. I appreciate that there was a #metoo subplot which I think will raise awareness among some of the teens who read this book. The romance was not necessary to advance the plot or for Riley's character development. The Girl Who Knew Too Much is a fun, fast-paced YA thriller which was hard to put down.
