Cutthroat academics, dark secrets
Whenever people speculate what kind of superpower they might like to have, invisibility is always brought up as a point of discussion. If You Could See the Sun would proffer that this is not a good choice, at least as it is depicted here. Fresh on the revelation that her parents can no longer afford her elite boarding school, she plunges into an unexpected bout of invisibility, prefaced only by an intense feeling of coldness. She can't predict it. She can't control it. But she can monetize it. With the help of her academic rival, with whom she bitterly shares the school's Top Achiever award, they create an app to uncover secrets and carry out clandestine tasks in exchange for huge sums of cash. But as the tasks become increasingly more complicated, ethically questionable, and legally fraught, Alice must decide whether her conscience is worth the price of tuition.

good YA magical realism
Alice Sun is different from the other students at her elite boarding school. They come from rich families and Alice’s parents while once barely able to afford her tuition, now cannot afford to keep her in school. Something changes though and Alice becomes even more different – she turns uncontrollably invisible. Realizing that she can use this to her advantage, Alice discovers her classmates’ secrets and sells them. But how far will things go? IF YOU COULD SEE THE SUN was filled with action, intrigue, and social commentary which made for an engaging read. I love academia settings so the premise of this book sounded interesting right from the start. I liked the writing style. The plot moved along at a good pace. I would have liked to see a bit more character development. The social commentary was nicely wrapped in and brought up some though-provoking subjects. I’d recommend IF YOU COULD SEE THE SUN to those looking for an entertaining YA read with magical realism.

Decent
Among China's most wealthy and influential teenagers at the elite Beijing international boarding school, Alice is the only scholarship student and she has always felt invisible. Then she begins to actually turn invisible without her control. When Alice's parents break the news that even with her scholarship, they can no longer afford her tuition, Alice begins to come up with a plan to monetize her new power. She hatches the idea to discover the scandalous secrets that her peers want to know, for a price. However, once the tasks begin to escalate from petty scandals to real crimes, Alice has to decide if this new plan is worth losing her conscience - or maybe even her life. I thought this was a decent read and I enjoyed it up until the end. I would have rated it 4 stars but the ending wrap-up could have been better. A big part of the storyline just kind of gets glossed over and not really explained. Other than that, it was a good book!
